Aug 3, 2026 Job Description Preschool Teacher Nature-Based Early Childhood Program Position Overview The Preschool Teacher will lead a nature-based, UPK certified preschool classroom in Rutland, serving 10 children ages 3-5 within a forest school model. This role blends play-based learning and early childhood best practices with daily outdoor exploration. Working alongside an assistant teacher(s), the Preschool Teacher plays a central role in implementing a well-established program while also contributing to its ongoing growth and refinement. Teachers are responsible for shaping curriculum, supporting classroom culture, and building strong relationships with children and families. This position is ideal for an experienced, reflective educator who is comfortable working outdoors in all seasons and values collaboration, curiosity, and child-centered learning. This position is full-time and year-round, although we may be able to offer it as a school year only position for the right candidate. We are looking for 2-3 preschool teachers and hope that one of them will take on the role of Lead Preschool Teacher for the school, which would come with some additional responsibilities and pay. There is opportunity for preschool teachers to grow into a director role in the future. Responsibilities Program Development & Curriculum Tailor and implement a preschool curriculum that integrates play-based learning, early literacy, and nature-based experiences Align teaching with the Vermont Early Learning Standards while remaining responsive to children's interests and developmental needs Use observation and documentation and reflection to adapt curriculum, routines, and classroom structures over time Collaborate with program leadership and teaching team to ensure alignment with the school's philosophy and program goals Teaching & Learning Serve as a lead classroom teacher, taking responsibility for planning and implementing daily experiences Create a predictable, supportive classroom environment that fosters independence, curiosity, and social development Support early literacy, language development, and foundational knowledge through developmentally appropriate instruction and experiences Incorporate outdoor learning, forest exploration, and hands-on discovery as core components of the program Observe, document, and assess student progress to inform instruction and support individual growth Collaboration & Leadership Work closely with co-teachers and assistant teachers to maintain consistent routines, expectations, and classroom culture Provide guidance and mentorship to assistant teachers and support staff Collaborate with program leadership to reflect on classroom practice and overall program development Participate actively in planning meetings, professional learning, and program reflection Family Communication & Engagement Build strong, respectful relationships with families Communicate regularly about classroom experiences, child development, and daily activities Conduct parent-teacher conferences and ongoing conversations about student progress Support families in understanding child development and the program's approach to learning Health, Safety & Compliance Ensure the classroom meets all Vermont
AOE & CCD
Licensing Regulations and school policies Maintain appropriate supervision, ratios, and safety practices in both indoor and outdoor environments Support health routines, risk management, and emergency procedures Qualifications
Required:
Vermont Early Childhood or Early Childhood Special Education Teaching License Experience working with preschool-aged children (3-5 years old) Strong understanding of child development, especially ages 3-5
Preferred:
Experience working as a teacher in a Vermont preschool Understanding of the forest school philosophy and programming Experience working within nature-based or environmental education Training/classes in nature-based, outdoor, or environmental education Passion for the outdoors Desired Attributes Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons (rain, snow, mud, and sun) Strong classroom presence paired with warmth and responsiveness Collaborative, reflective, and open to feedback Able to balance structure and flexibility in a dynamic environment Passionate about play-based learning, nature, and early childhood education
