Speech and Debate Coach (Part Time) at Valley International Preparatory High School Print Application Deadline 7/1/2026 11:55 PM Pacific Date Posted 4/28/2026 Contact VIPHS Hiring Team Number of Openings 1 Salary Pay dependent on experience Length of Work Year 10 Employment Type Part Time Location Los Angeles, CA Location Northridge, CA Job Summary Job Summary Valley International Preparatory High School (VIPHS) is seeking a part-time Speech and Debate instructor/coach for the 2026-2027 school year. The instructor will teach Speech and Debate classes twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 AM to 10:05 AM and support the growth of the school's competitive speech and debate program. This position includes classroom instruction, lesson preparation, and coaching students for competition. The instructor/coach will also attend and support students at approved weekend speech and debate tournaments during the school year. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in speech and debate, the ability to build students' speaking, argumentation, and performance skills, and the enthusiasm to help grow a competitive program. Because this role involves direct work with students, all required background clearances and mandated trainings must be completed prior to the start of employment. Essential Elements:
Print Scope of Service Teaching and coaching Speech and Debate during a scheduled Tuesday and Thursday class periods, approximately 190 minutes per week. Preparing for and delivering instruction during those class sessions Supporting the development of students' competitive speech and debate skills Attending and coaching students at weekend speech and debate tournaments, up to 10 tournaments, with tournaments beyond 10 requiring prior school approval Compensation Compensation for instructional services would be paid at an hourly rate to be negotiated with the school for approved hours worked in connection with the Speech and Debate class. Compensation would be paid on a twice-monthly payroll schedule, in accordance with the school's regular payroll practices and applicable wage and hour requirements. In addition, attendance at approved weekend speech and debate tournaments shall be compensated by a flat $350 stipend per tournament, up to 10 tournaments. Tournament-related duties and costs such as transportation, mileage, meals, parking, and other incidental expenses will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts to the business manager. Background Clearance and Training Requirements Because this role involves direct work with students, any final employment offer shall be contingent upon compliance with all applicable school safety and legal requirements, including DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance and any other required background check or clearance procedures, to be completed prior to the start of employment. Prior to beginning work, you would also be required to complete all mandated trainings required by the school, including Mandated Reporter Training, Bloodborne Pathogens Training, and Youth Suicide Prevention Training. Any final offer of employment would be subject to approval by the school and completion of all required employment paperwork and onboarding requirements. Employment would also be subject to all applicable school policies, payroll procedures, and legal compliance requirements.
