Primary Purpose:
The Dyslexia Specialist provides expertise in identifying, supporting, and remediating students with characteristics of dyslexia and related reading disorders. This role ensures compliance with state and federal requirements, supports evidence-based instruction, and collaborates with staff and families to improve student literacy outcomes.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or required training for subject and level assigned Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Deep understanding of scientific-based reading research and evidence-based practices for teaching reading and math and assessing student progress toward achievement of benchmarks Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to disaggregate and interpret data Ability to assist teachers in the development and implementation of intervention plans Ability to assist teachers in effective instructional strategies Ability to implement and monitor the intervention plans Ability to implement diagnostic programs in reading and math Ability to communicate data to administrators, teachers, and parents
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years successful classroom teaching experience Experience working with students with dyslexia or reading difficulties Experience administering or interpreting reading assessments (preferred) Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Support & Intervention Provide direct, explicit, systematic dyslexia intervention using evidence-based programs Deliver instruction aligned with structured literacy practices (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) Progress monitor student growth and adjust instruction accordingly Maintain fidelity to district-approved dyslexia programs Assessment & Identification Assist in the screening and identification of students with characteristics of dyslexia Administer and interpret assessments related to reading and language processing Collaborate with evaluation teams to support eligibility determinations Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with district and state guidelines Compliance & Program Implementation Ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and state dyslexia laws Participate in Section 504 or ARD meetings as appropriate Assist with the development and implementation of intervention plans and accommodations Maintain required documentation for audits and compliance reviews Collaboration & Consultation Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, and campus administrators Provide strategies and accommodations for classroom implementation Serve as a resource for literacy best practices and dyslexia support Work closely with interventionists, instructional coaches, and campus leadership Professional Development Provide training to teachers and staff on dyslexia awareness and instructional strategies Support campus and district literacy initiatives Stay current on research and best practices in dyslexia and reading instruction Parent & Family Engagement Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress Provide guidance and resources to support reading development at home Participate in parent meetings and conferences as needed Supervisory Responsibilities May supervise paraprofessionals or intervention aides assigned to dyslexia programs Provide guidance and oversight to ensure instructional fidelity

The employee is expected to maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing, moving small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment are required while performing the duties of this job.

  • Works 195-day Contract
  • Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.
