Director of Early Literacy and Professional Learning Primary Function:
The literacy coach will lead the implementation of the Georgia Early Literacy Act at the school level. The primary goal is to ensure all students achieve grade-level reading proficiency by the end of 3rd grade using evidence-based "Science of Reading" frameworks. This is a non-supervisory, coaching-based role focused on teacher capacity building, data analysis, and research-based structured literacy instruction. These will be district-hired and assigned coaches. Primary Responsibilities Provide job-embedded coaching to K-3 teachers on the science of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
Model effective literacy instruction and co-teach in classrooms
Support implementation of high-quality instructional materials and structured literacy practices
Analyze student data to guide instruction and intervention decisions
Facilitate professional learning and ongoing teacher development
Collaborate with school leaders to monitor literacy goals and progress
Assist with screening, progress monitoring, and intervention planning
Ensure alignment with state literacy requirements and reporting expectations
Redeliver district and state-level training on "Science of Reading" and structured literacy.
Spend 70% of the day in classrooms supporting teachers with strong instructional strategies. Conduct coaching cycles with teachers to enhance current instructional practices.
Required Skills:
Deep expertise in Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading (foundational nuances of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).
Ability to interpret complex data from state-approved universal screeners to inform MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports).
Proven ability to coach adult learners in a non-threatening, collaborative manner.
Must be proficient in oral and written communication, and interpersonal relations, and competent in organizing, planning, documenting, monitoring, and evaluating Georgia pre-k requirements.
Ability to work effectively independently and in a team setting.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Documented success in evidence-based word recognition and comprehension instruction. In compliance with HB 1193 and Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) requirements:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, OR TRAINING
Valid Georgia Professional Teaching Certification
Endorsement:
Must obtain the Georgia Literacy Coaching Endorsement within the next two years.
Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in Elementary Education, Reading, Special Education, or a related field..
