Job Description

Help struggling readers build confidence, mastery, and a lifelong foundation for success. We are seeking a compassionate, skilled, and highly engaging Reading Specialist / Barton Interventionist to provide individualized literacy instruction for students with dyslexia, reading challenges, and other language-based learning differences. This role is ideal for educators who understand that reading intervention is about building confidence, trust, resilience, and helping students rediscover their ability to learn. Our ideal candidate is passionate about structured literacy, values evidence-based intervention, and can connect deeply with students who may have experienced frustration or discouragement in traditional learning environments. This is a flexible, part-time position serving students through in-home instruction, virtual sessions, and local library-based learning environments. What You'll Do Provide individualized reading intervention using the Barton Reading & Spelling System and/or other structured literacy approaches Deliver explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding, fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension Create an encouraging, supportive learning environment where students feel safe to take risks and grow Build strong relationships with students and families through clear communication and consistent support Monitor student progress carefully and adjust pacing based on mastery and individual learning needs Support students with dyslexia, reading disabilities, ADHD, executive functioning challenges, and other exceptional learning profiles Reinforce confidence, persistence, and positive self-perception as a learner Maintain progress documentation and communicate regularly using tools such as Class Dojo and TutorBird Collaborate with families to support carryover and long-term literacy success Who You Are You are an educator who: Understands that struggling readers need both structure and encouragement Can build rapport quickly with students who may feel defeated or anxious about reading Brings patience, consistency, warmth, and attentiveness to each session Values mastery-based instruction and individualized pacing Is committed to helping students grow academically and emotionally Thrives in a flexible, student-centered learning environment
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree Barton certification or reading specialist Experience providing reading intervention, literacy tutoring, or specialized instruction Strong understanding of structured literacy principles Availability to work on a consistent weekly schedule
Strongly Preferred:
Barton certification and implementation experience Experience supporting students with dyslexia and language-based learning differences Background in Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, SPIRE, or other evidence-based structured literacy programs Experience working with students with ESE needs, ADHD, autism spectrum differences, or executive functioning challenges What We Offer Flexible scheduling with consistent student caseload opportunities Meaningful one-on-one work that creates lasting academic transformation Supportive team environment Employee discount The opportunity to help students rebuild confidence and discover success in reading
