Job Description

Reading Specialist Teacher Job Description and Person Specification A Reading Specialist's primary duty is to work in small groups with students with difficulty reading at their grade level. The reading specialists share responsibility with classroom teachers for assessing students' reading abilities, identifying deficiencies, and responsible for organizing and implementing, for identified students, an instructional intervention program consistent with the Science of Reading. Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Prime Responsibility  Teach small groups of children in the required grade level K - 8 for approximately 30 minutes daily in a school setting  Accelerate the reading progress of pupils to bring them up to national age- expected levels of attainment  Disseminate knowledge and expertise across the school to ensure principles and practice of Science of Reading impact on whole school practice In-Service Professional Development  Attend designated training sessions, staff meetings, and district training  During the year, receive support visits to enhance professional skills  Meet all requirements for teacher training and licensing, including completion of professional development design by the district. This will include additional reading outside of school hours. Communication  Liaise with the classroom teachers and relevant staff on behalf of each child  Develop home-school links for the children in the program  Submit data as specified  Receive visits from school colleagues, principal, parents, and interested teachers as appropriate  Plans, leads and attends literacy events designed to engage families Assessment/Data Collection  Maintain careful records on each child as a basis for teaching  Follow Science of Reading research and procedures Qualifications/Experience  Successful qualified licensed teacher with a range of teaching experience, ideally at least 3 years of classroom experience Personal Qualities and Skills  Willingness to learn, open to new ideas, acquire and apply new skills  Adaptable and problem-solving attitude  Good interpersonal skills and prepared to work as part of a group  Willingness to share expertise with others.
