Full Time Library & Literacy Teacher (K-8)

Bernard School Description:
The Library & Literacy Teacher is responsible for fostering a love of reading while strengthening literacy skills for students in grades K-8 through a weekly resource schedule. This position blends library management with intentional literacy instruction, creating a welcoming and engaging environment where students grow as readers, writers, and researchers. For students in grades K-5, the teacher provides interactive read-aloud experiences paired with meaningful follow-up activities that may include discussion, crafts, early writing, and foundational reading skill development. For grades 6-8, instruction focuses on strengthening research, writing, and executive functioning skills, helping students become independent learners and critical thinkers. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Library & Literacy Teacher oversees the organization and daily operations of the school library, including maintaining the collection and managing the book checkout system. The role is centered on inspiring curiosity, encouraging a lifelong love of reading, and supporting students in developing strong literacy habits. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, organized, and creative educator with strong communication and classroom management skills. This individual enjoys working with students of all ages, differentiates instruction to meet diverse learning needs, and creates a structured yet inviting space that promotes both independent reading and active learning.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver engaging literacy instruction for students in grades K-8 within a resource schedule Facilitate interactive read-alouds and design meaningful follow-up activities for grades K-5 Teach research, writing, and executive functioning skills to students in grades 6-8 Encourage reading engagement and help students select appropriate, high-interest books Manage and maintain the school library collection, including organization and inventory Oversee and operate the library checkout system for students and staff Create a welcoming, organized, and student-centered library environment Collaborate with classroom teachers to support literacy development across content areas Differentiate instruction to meet a variety of student needs and abilities Communicate effectively with staff and administration Participate in faculty meetings, school initiatives, and professional development
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Library Science, English, or a related field Valid teaching certificate (or ability to obtain certification) Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students preferred Knowledge of literacy instruction, children's literature, and research skills development Experience with or willingness to learn library management systems
