Aug 30, 2026 Job Description Pilgrim Area Collaborative is a public educational collaborative that serves students with a wide range of disabilities from primary through post-secondary levels from all over the South Shore. We are currently looking to add a part-time Reading Specialist to work approximately 20 hours per week.
Please note:
This position would start for the 2026-27 School Year.
Qualifications:
Valid DESE License to Practice as a Reading Specialist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Reports to: Program Directors & Executive Director
Job Objective:
To assist students in reaching their potential and to foster optimal participation in their environment through reading instruction in accordance to IEPs.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Participate as a member of the evaluation TEAM by performing assessments, making recommendations through written reports and by writing appropriate sections of students' educational plans. 2. Serve as consultant to school personnel and parents, sharing knowledge and information related to area of expertise as needed. 3. Serve as a liaison between community providers [e.g. medical personnel, private therapists] and school personnel as appropriate. 4. Maintain communication with parents regarding student performance and progress as needed. 5. Provide direct service for an assigned caseload, as outlined on students' educational plan. Written preparation for therapy sessions may be requested by Director. 6. Maintain thorough and ongoing records of individual student performance and progress. 7. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis. 8. Work in a cooperative inter-disciplinary team approach in planning and implementing student services. 9. Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials. 10. Develop and maintain a therapy environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of resources available. This includes the implementation of appropriate systems of behavior management. 11. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. 12. Assist in the upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policy. 13. Attend and participate in faculty meetings. 14. Provide for his/her professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning. 15. Any and all other duties required to fulfill the responsibilities of a therapist of students with special needs.
