This is a full-time position reporting to the Principal. The Reading Specialist will work collaboratively with classroom teachers to provide targeted literacy instruction through a combination of small group instruction, one-on-one interventions, and push-in support. This individual will play a key role in fostering a love of reading, strengthening literacy skills, and working with teachers to strengthen and align curriculum.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide differentiated reading instruction through small group work, individualized intervention, and push-in classroom support. Design and implement structured literacy instruction Integrate multiple instructional approaches, including programs such as BrainSpring & Word Revelation, to support decoding, fluency, and comprehension across grade levels. Assess student literacy needs using a variety of tools, including diagnostic and progress-monitoring assessments. Use comprehensive data (decoding, fluency, comprehension, and benchmark assessments such as STAR) to inform instruction and monitor student growth. Collaborate closely with classroom teachers and the student support coordinator to plan, implement, and adjust instruction to meet diverse student needs. Communicate effectively and consistently with families and teachers regarding student progress and strategies for support at home. Maintain accurate records of student performance and intervention outcomes. Support a positive, inclusive, and faith-centered learning environment. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events as required.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Reading, or a related field (Master's degree or Reading Specialist certification preferred). Training in an Orton-Gillingham-based program or similar structured literacy approach preferred. Training in Brainspring Phonics First and Word Revelation. Knowledge of and commitment to the Science of Reading. Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students in literacy instruction. Practicing Catholic or a willingness to support and uphold the mission and values of Catholic education.
Desired Skills and Dispositions:
Strong communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Willingness to be trained in additional literacy programs, including Word Revelation, BrainSpring Phonics First, and to thoughtfully integrate multiple approaches to meet student needs. Ability to analyze and apply multiple sources of student data to drive instructional decisions. Proactive in achieving goals. Flexible and adaptable in meeting the evolving needs of students and classrooms. Utilizes creativity, adaptability, and initiative to find solutions.
