The school offers a coed program for young children at the Barat Center for Early Childhood Education and then an all-girls experience from K-12 on our 110-acre campus in Greenwich, Connecticut. We are proudly part of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. We are currently seeking an Upper School Director of Science Research / Science Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The Upper School Director of Science Research will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing Sacred Heart Greenwich's bold vision for STEM education. As part of the Pursuing Excellence Strategic Plan and a transformative $60+ million capital campaign, focused largely on STEM facilities and programming, this educator will help design and bring to life innovative, research-driven curricula while playing a key role in activating a new, state-of-the-art STEM facility. Upper School Director of Science Research / Science Teacher Reports to: Head of Upper School, 9-12

Exempt Job Summary The Upper School Director of Science Research oversees the school's established research program by guiding students in grades 9 through 12 throughout the research process. The teacher is responsible for developing and delivering curriculum focused on essential scientific research skills, overseeing students' development and completion of original and authentic scientific research, and facilitating student participation in science fairs, outside research opportunities, and pathways to scientific publication. In addition, the research teacher is expected to participate in professional development, attend student competitions, and communicate with outside scientists to enhance the students' ability to design, conduct, interpret, and apply original scientific research. This position also includes teaching two sections of Upper School Neuroscience. Essential Functions The successful science research candidate will guide students in all aspects of conducting original research so that the students will be able to: understand research methods; choose a specific topic of interest; read and analyze scientific literature; develop a testable research question; write scientific abstracts, article summaries, research proposals, and a final research paper; design controlled experiments; engage in and analyze original hands-on research, at times supervised by both a scientist mentor and classroom teacher; and present research in classroom and school forums as well as at regional, statewide, and national competitions such as the Regeneron Science Talent Search. In addition, the successful research teacher will be able to: design research curricula that support the needs of the students; plan research studies to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of the students; teach students to build upon previous research in promising areas of study that connect to a larger body of work; use environmental events and scientific phenomena as opportunities to conduct research; keep abreast of current significant research studies and techniques; form and maintain collaborations and partnerships with scientists who can serve as mentors; guide students to engage in peer review; teach students to recognize and state the limitations of their research; meet with students outside of class, if necessary, to complete research; actively promote the Sacred Heart Greenwich Science Research program within and beyond the school community; organize all aspects of student attendance at research competitions; attend student research competitions and work with the Communications Department to effectively share student results with the wider community; assess student progress and provide feedback on a regular basis; take measures to enhance each student's research experience; maintain research budget and order the necessary supplies for experimentation; instruct students on the proper and safe use of chemicals, materials, and equipment needed for on-campus research; maintain inventory of chemicals, materials, and equipment needed for on-campus research; support students and College Counselors in summarizing and promoting student achievement in science research to universities and outside institutions; clearly and routinely communicate students' progress and development throughout the research process with parents; serve as an advisor to a group of Upper School students; and participate in regular Upper School and departmental meetings, and perform various faculty supervisory duties. Qualifications The successful candidate will hold a master's or doctoral degree in a scientific discipline as well as a proven track record of teaching science at the high school level for a minimum of 3 years. Research experience and science competition oversight is also preferable.
