Job Description:
General Statement of Duties:
The UBMS Summer Instructor is responsible for teaching two sections of a non-credit course to high school students attending the UBMS Summer Academy. Instructors provide rigorous, project based, college preparatory curriculum to students during a five -week, residential academy hosted at Fitchburg State University.
Responsibilities:
Teach assigned course(s) which may include: MCAS Math, MCAS English, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Computer Science, Foreign Language (Spanish/Latin/ASL), English/Language Arts or LAB Sciences (Biology, chemistry, and physics). Develop and implement rigorous lessons and learning opportunities for students that include hands on work and working with classmates in small pairs or larger groups. Evaluate student learning through the use of formal and informal assessment strategies. Provide students with regular feedback on assignments. Communicate student concerns with project director and college access advisor. Submit required grade reports in week 3 and week 6 of the Summer Academy. Attend onboarding training (virtually or in person).
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in the content area required. Demonstrated ability to reach and motivate low-level learners. Evidence of commitment to classroom teaching/learning, and a demonstrated ability to incorporate research methodology and technology in the classroom. Experience with project-based learning preferred. Willingness to advise students to help them meet their goals. Massachusetts Teaching Certification in Content Area (8-12) preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree in content area preferred, education, or teaching preferred
Additional Information:
The Summer Academy 2026 will run from June 29 - July 31, 2026. There will also be onboarding occurring the week of June 22-26, 2026 (online if needed). For the five-week residential stay the Math and Science Lab instructors can expect to teach Monday-Thursday between 8 am - 12 pm. ELA, Computer Science, and Foreign Language instructors can expect to teach Monday-Thursday between 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM. Once a week, all instructors will meet from 12:15 - 12:45 PM with the project director to discuss student progress and curriculum. Instructors will also be paid for one hour of prep each day. Friday's will be field trip days, and no instruction will be done on those days. 12-16 hours of instruction and prep time should be expected each week. No instruction will take place on July 3rd. Equivalency Statement Applicants who do not meet the qualifications as stated above are encouraged to put in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them with the equivalent combination of education, training and experience required for the responsibilities of this position.
