  • Full-time The Intellectus Prep High School Science Teacher will have a long-term vision and a desire to prepare our scholars with the social awareness, and intellectual capacity to be active in the forward development of their communities.
They will have the ability and vision to build out a long-term curriculum that allows science to be useful to scholars. They nurture an emotionally healthy learning environment that will motivate all children in ways that encourage them to welcome challenges in pursuit of high academic goals and to develop into independent, critical, inquisitive, socially-aware and responsive thinking. This educator guides scholars to be active participants in their educational journey and provides opportunities for scholars to use their awareness to contribute positively to their communities. Curriculum and Planning Primarily teach Regents level Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry Courses Develop students' practices of questioning, modeling, constructing explanations, data analysis, argumentation, and planning and conducting interactive labs Cultivate an awareness of the interconnected nature of fields of science (e.g., ecosystems, climate change, and lunar phases) and our local and global community Follow deliberately student-centered and engaging lessons that encourage scholars to be leaders of their learning and to use their knowledge in relevant ways Embed reflection of our core values in each lesson to allow students to make direct correlations Use assessment data to identify gaps in knowledge and understanding, inform individual, small group, and whole-group reteaching, and help scholars create academic goals and set milestones Create a culture of feedback and revision that promotes a growth mindset and a love of learning that leads students to welcome challenges and celebrate growth Work collaboratively with team level colleagues to plan and share ideas and address concerns Provide the differentiation and accommodations needed for the growth and success of all students; go above and beyond to ensure that all students are meeting appropriate standards Classroom Culture Maintain a collaborative learning environment that cultivates leadership and pride in/accountability to the school community through responsibilities within the class/school community Facilitate Morning Meeting to help maintain the school-wide cultural expectations and norms Build healthy, genuine relationships with scholars that enhance their school experience Actively reinforcing SEL strategies to help students to engage positively within their school community and with peers Communication and Collaboration Fully embrace Intellectus Prep's mission and values and promote them to students, parents, and colleagues Collaborate as part of department teams and as needed, coordinating all instructional activities with teachers, assistants, and instructional leaders; collaborate with other staff to envision and execute projects Proactively seek assistance or advice when faced with challenging teaching situations; Maintain positive relationships with and support the learning of all staff members Appropriately give and receive feedback to/from students, parents, faculty, staff, and administration Keep families well-informed of student performance and progress Model strong written and verbal skills Professionalism Fully participate in all school and departmental and grade meetings, designated school functions outside of school hours, and opportunities for individual and school-wide professional development Meet expectations including punctuality and professionalism in conversation and writing; consistently meet deadlines and communicate frequently and appropriately on progress on projects and goals. Reflect on professional practice through self-reflection and engagement in informal and formal feedback processes Exhibits pose and tact when addressing scholars, colleagues, staff, and parents Personal Attributes The unwavering belief that all scholars can learn at a high level A genuine passion to serve the scholars from the communities for which we serve Positive attitude, and solution-oriented Ability to be self-directed, while being able to take direction Organized and systems driven Community, social justice, and service-oriented Educational Background and Work Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required Successful experience working with and/or teaching children in urban middle school grades required Master's degree in Science discipline preferred (any science discipline) Experience with and interest in working with high needs students preferred New York State teaching certification in the required Experience with UBD, UDL, and SEL is a plus Demonstrated ability to engage in conversations about anti-racism and culturally responsive practices Must reside within the
