Additional Information (Include duties and tasks specific to this position) Upward Bound Program Instructor -
Science Staff:
Science Teacher Pay:
$35 per hour
Hours :
9am-1pm Attend one weekly staff meeting, prepare mid-summer and final student evaluations to help students strengthen their academic performance.
Dates:
Six-week summer program - June 9 -July 21,2026.
Location:
Tidewater Community College Building E Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Teach classes to high school participants as part of Upward Bound summer program Revise and/or create subject specific curriculum aligned with UB's academic summer program theme Select materials for themed designed courses based on UB staff recommendations Develop and submit lesson and assessment plans Deliver courses geared towards generating excitement for learning, as well as developing concrete academic skills in UB participants Provide course content in a manner that helps UB participants to have a head start on their Fall 2023 course work Monitor, record and report students' performance on a weekly basis Provide appropriate classroom management for 9th-11th graders Maintain student records in a secure and confidential manner Complete formative and summative evaluations for each student in class(es) Attend UB staff orientations, weekly meetings and post-summer meeting(s) Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
(1) Current Portsmouth Public Schools teacher or Virginia certified teacher with Bachelor's degree in an academic course that individual will be tutoring; (2) Proven knowledge of academic course that individual will be teaching; (3) Knowledge of and/or experience working with high school students; and (4) Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming economic, social and academic barriers similar to the students.
