GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops skills in the Family and Consumer Science courses.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
The minimum performance expectations may include, but not limited to, the following functions/tasks: Teaches content and skills in Family and Consumer Science courses, utilizing curriculum designated by the Virginia Department of Education; Instructs students in citizenship and basic matters specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Tazewell County Public Schools; Adapts Family and Consumer Science materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students; Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division's basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students; Evaluates academic and social growth of students; Prepares report cards, keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary; Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas; Evaluates each student's progress in meeting the course standards for Family and Consumer Science; Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment; Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress; Supervises students in assigned out of classroom activities during the working day; Participates in faculty committees, staff development programs, and curriculum meetings; Participates in the sponsorship of student activities, parent activities which occur in school, and afterschool activities; Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices; Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers; Assumes duties as directed by the building administrator.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field. Must be eligible or possess a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach Family and Consumer Science courses.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with staff members, administration, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
