Founded in 1867, and located in Baltimore, Maryland, Morgan State University is designated by the state as Maryland's Pre-eminent Public Urban Research University and currently has an R2 Carnegie classification. The university's recently adopted strategic plan places emphasis on Morgan's ascendency to an R1 research university. Morgan's mission is to serve a multiethnic and multiracial student body and to help ensure that the benefits of higher education are enjoyed by a broad segment of the population. To achieve this mission, the university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including 24 doctoral programs, and currently has the third largest enrollment among HBCUs in the nation.
