Affairs — Selma City Schools Selma, AL $85/day Substitute / On-Demand We usually respond within a day About this role Selma City Schools is seeking dedicated and professional substitute teachers to support classrooms across the district in Selma, Alabama. As a vital part of the educational community, substitute teachers play a critical role in ensuring continuity of learning when regular classroom teachers are unavailable. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to make a direct impact on students' academic experiences and daily lives. This position will provide instruction, manage the classroom environment, and promote student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitute teachers are expected to step into a variety of classroom settings — from elementary to high school — and maintain the structure, routines, and expectations that students rely on each day. Adaptability, professionalism, and a genuine passion for working with young people are essential to success in this role. Position schedule will be based on the school's standard schedule. While some districts may offer opportunities outside of the regular school schedule, these are not guaranteed and opportunities will be limited. This is an on-call, as-needed position, meaning availability and flexibility are key. Candidates who are reliable, punctual, and eager to support the Selma City Schools community will find this role both rewarding and impactful. A Day in the Life A typical day as a substitute teacher with Selma City Schools begins with arriving at the assigned school before the first bell, checking in with the front office, and reviewing the lesson plans left by the regular classroom teacher. You'll implement those lesson plans, assign classwork and homework, and take attendance in accordance with school procedures. Throughout the day, you'll guide students through their scheduled subjects, answer questions, and keep the classroom environment focused and productive. You'll maintain classroom control and discipline, set up basic technology equipment to support instruction, and follow all school rules and procedures. At the end of the day, you'll wrap up by completing a daily report for the classroom teacher, summarizing student behavior, progress, and any notable events. Each day brings a new classroom and a new opportunity to positively influence the students of Selma City Schools. Responsibilities Implement teacher-prepared lesson plans and deliver instruction to students in the regular teacher's absence Assign and explain classwork and homework in alignment with the classroom teacher's curriculum Maintain classroom control and discipline, ensuring a safe and productive learning environment Complete and submit a detailed daily report for the classroom teacher summarizing classroom activities, student behavior, progress, and any notable events Take accurate attendance in accordance with school and district procedures Set up and operate basic technology equipment to support classroom instruction Follow all school rules, policies, and procedures throughout the school day Communicate professionally with school staff, administrators, and students to ensure a smooth and effective school day Support classrooms across the district Ensure continuity of learning when regular classroom teachers are unavailable Make a direct impact on students' academic experiences and daily lives Promote student learning Step into a variety of classroom settings — from elementary to high school — and maintain the structure, routines, and expectations that students rely on each day Arrive at the assigned school before the first bell Check in with the front office Review lesson plans left by the regular classroom teacher Guide students through their scheduled subjects and answer questions Keep the classroom environment focused and productive Requirements Required ! ALSDE Background Check — a completed and cleared Alabama State Department of Education background check is required prior to placement ! Erin's Law Online Training — completion of mandatory Erin's Law training as required by Alabama state law ! Jason Flatt Act Training — completion of mandatory Jason Flatt Act (youth suicide awareness) training as required by Alabama state law ! Prior experience working with children in an educational, childcare, or youth-focused setting ! Ability to work on an on-call, as-needed basis with flexibility in scheduling ! Punctual, professional demeanor with a friendly and approachable attitude toward students and staff ! Ability to lift heavy objects up to 40 lbs as needed in a school environment ! Adaptability ! Professionalism ! Genuine passion for working with young people ! Reliability ! Eagerness to support the Selma City Schools community Preferred ALSDE Teaching Certificate — an active Alabama State Department of Education teaching certificate Alabama Substitute Teacher License — a valid Alabama substitute teacher license for candidates without a full teaching certificate Selma Substitute Waiver — candidates who qualify under the Selma Substitute Waiver Experience managing diverse classroom environments across multiple grade levels or subject areas Familiarity with educational technology tools and classroom management platforms Benefits of joining Spur Weekly Pay Get paid every Friday via direct deposit or Spur pay card.
