Mild/Moderate Special Day Class Teacher Job Purpose Statement/s:
Provides a quality education program for students with mild to moderate needs providing instruction, services, coordination, planning, evaluation, and remediation. These may include all classifications of special education students whose individualized education program (IEP) requires placement in the Mild to Moderate Program. Under the guidance and direction of the Director, Student Services and immediately responsible to the Director, Student Services and School Principal while on school site, the Mild/Moderate Special Day Class Teacher assumes the following:
Essential Job Functions:
  • Provides direct instruction for students whose needs are identified in a written individualized education program developed by the IEP Team.
  • Provides information and assistance to individuals with exceptional needs and their parents.
  • Modifies and utilizes regular core curriculum materials and teaching strategies pertinent to individual needs.
  • Prescribes and implements behavior management techniques as appropriate.
  • Provides appropriate activities and opportunities to enhance the students' development of positive self-concept.
  • Updates academic assessments and reviews progress with each student and his/her parents.
  • Provides teaching and classroom management control strategies that are considered appropriate and effective in meeting the needs of each student in both academic and non-academic areas.
  • Fosters inclusion of special education students with regular-aged peers by establishing positive relationships with regular teaching staff and collaboratively developing and supporting inclusion activities.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education and self-selected professional activities.
  • Performs basic attendance accounting as required.
  • Shares in the supervision of own pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Attends regular and special meetings called by Principal, or Director, Student Services.
Other Job Functions:
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records.
  • Participates in curriculum developmental programs within the school and/or District.
  • Shares in the sponsorship of school activities and participates in faculty committees.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals as necessary.
  • Assists other teachers in diagnosis and remediation of learning problems as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
