Job Description
Overview Join our dynamic educational team as a Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Teacher and FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Advisor for secondary students in grades 9 through 12. This vibrant role combines engaging classroom instruction with inspiring leadership in student organizations, fostering essential life skills, career readiness, and personal development. Responsibilities Develop and implement comprehensive FCS curricula aligned with state standards, incorporating curriculum development best practices and utilizing learning technology tools to enhance student engagement. Deliver engaging lessons in areas such as nutrition, family relationships, child development, personal finance, and culinary arts, ensuring clarity and alignment with AP style and Chicago Manual of Style guidelines. Lead FCCLA activities by mentoring students in leadership skills, community service projects, and competitive events that promote teamwork and civic responsibility. Plan and coordinate extracurricular events, competitions, and community outreach initiatives that foster student involvement and leadership development. Manage classroom environments effectively through classroom management strategies and behavior management techniques to create a safe and inclusive space for all learners. Assess student progress through standardized testing, formative assessments, and portfolio reviews; provide constructive feedback to support continuous improvement. Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning, instructional strategies, and integrating learning technology to meet diverse student needs including special education or Montessori approaches when applicable. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, participation in extracurricular activities, and FCCLA membership; ensure compliance with school policies. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and upcoming events; utilize strong communication skills to foster positive relationships. Support students' social-emotional development by mentoring them on personal growth topics such as literacy education, childhood development, or public speaking skills. Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Sciences or related field preferred and will be given first consideration Valid Colorado Teaching License with appropriate CTE endorsement, or ability to obtain (additional coursework required for eligibility toward a Colorado Teacher License is required or must be completed within an agreed-upon timeframe) Currently hold a Colorado Substitute Teaching License if Teacher License is not completed Knowledge of Colorado CTE standards and career pathways Strong classroom management and instructional planning skills required Experience teaching secondary FCS courses preferred Experience with inquiry-based learning and project-based instruction preferred Ability to integrate primary sources and research-based activities Experience incorporating technology into instruction Bilingual skills preferred Prior classroom experience teaching Family and Consumer Sciences or related fields such as nutrition, child development or home economics is highly preferred. Demonstrated ability to develop engaging lesson plans that incorporate creative writing, math concepts like algebra or geometry when relevant to curriculum content. Experience working with diverse student populations including those requiring special education accommodations or private school settings is advantageous. Proven skills in curriculum development utilizing current educational standards and best practices for teaching physical education or health topics when applicable. Strong background in coaching sports or leading extracurricular activities that promote teamwork and leadership among students is a plus. Familiarity with standardized testing procedures, tutoring strategies, library services integration or academic advising enhances your effectiveness as an educator. Excellent communication skills—public speaking proficiency and copy editing abilities—are essential for delivering compelling lessons and managing classroom communications effectively. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong understanding of Family & Consumer Sciences content areas Ability to deliver hands-on, engaging instruction Classroom and lab management skills Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to integrate technology into instruction Organizational and time-management skills Working Conditions Classroom and laboratory (kitchen/child development lab) setting Exposure to kitchen equipment, cleaning agents, and standard school environment conditions Occasional evening or weekend events (CTSO activities, competitions, etc.) Evaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and the Colorado Teacher Evaluation System.
