General Duties:
To assist the teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom activities in an environment that students can learn effectively.
Responsibilities:
1.Modify work accordingly so students can access the curriculum. 2.Working in both the inclusion and resource model. 3.Guide students to develop positive relationships with peers and adults. 4.Assist with the supervision of students during student free time. 5.Maintain work and study areas. 6.Collect and display suitable material for educational displays. 7.Develop materials and group lessons. 8.Modify student work to help foster a positive academic experience. 9.Attend all necessary PPT meetings for students on current caseload, and perspective students. 10.Collaborate with general education teachers as well as related service providers. 11.Requires lifting during transfers and repositioning. 12.Assist with toileting, feeding and hygiene issues (if necessary). 13.Preferred to attend upcoming Safety Care training for de-escalation techniques. 14.Required to participate in aquatics program (be in the pool with students). 15.Knowledge of classroom strategies to help with de-escalation. 16.Able to assist the student when met with a challenge by physical needs when necessary, such as outbursts, running, etc. 17.Case management (contact families, set up meetings, meet all deadlines of IEP, evaluations, progress monitoring, etc..,). 18.Implement sensory diet techniques. 19.Differentiate instruction and materials based on each individual learner. 20.Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
1.Meet Connecticut teaching requirements through CSDE for Special Education A Bachelor's Degree or beyond in any area, OR i.

A Bachelor's Degree or beyond in any area of Special Education, OR ii.

Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 college credits), OR iii.

Meet the standard of performance set by the State of Connecticut. 2.Comprehensive Special Education, Grades K-12 (165) certification, preferred. 3.Demonstrated aptitude for working with a special need's population. 4.Must possess good communication skills and patience. 3. College level training in education/childcare, highly desirable. 4. Knowledge of FBA, BIP and Manifestations. 5. Knowledge of the Unique Learning Curriculum. 6. Knowledge of
MTSS/PBIS.
7. Knowledge of Social and Emotional learning. 8. Knowledge of PEC's (Picture Exchange Communication). 9. Knowledge of classroom strategies to help with de-escalation. 10. Documented experience and/or training with students who have Autism, medically fragile, multi-handicapped students, intellectual impairments and behaviors that interfere with learning. 11. Knowledge of
CDP, ORS & BHDDH.
12. Knowledge of Transition Services, Self-Determination & Self-Advocacy. 13. Completion of a successful interview.
