Job Description

Category Schools - Special Education Teacher Job Type Contract Make a meaningful impact working with diverse learners in a supportive environment as a special education teacher for 5th grade students at the elementary level. This contract-based opportunity involves delivering cross-categorical instructional programming, providing specialized support to students with a variety of academic, behavioral, communication, adaptive, and functional needs. In this role, you'll deliver instruction that aligns with grade-level standards while also individualizing teaching to meet IEP goals. The classroom is equipped with a range of supports, including visual and sensory tools, structured teaching strategies, and ongoing collaboration with related service providers such as speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and counselors. You will work closely with a dedicated program aide and, as needed, additional 1:1 support staff to ensure each student's needs are met.
Qualifications & Skills:
Valid special education teaching credentials/certification (Illinois) Previous experience or training working with cross-categorical programming preferred Ability to design, implement, and monitor individualized education plans (IEPs) Familiarity with behavioral and social-emotional interventions in an elementary classroom setting Strong communication and collaboration abilities with families and multidisciplinary teams Adaptable approach to teaching and supporting diverse learners
Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver differentiated instruction targeting both grade-level standards and individual IEP objectives Utilize structured teaching methods, visual aids, and sensory materials Implement and monitor behavioral and social-emotional strategies Collaborate daily with related service staff and support team members Maintain positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues Track and document student progress, updating IEPs and communicating effectively with stakeholders This is an excellent opportunity to use your expertise in special education and help students achieve success both academically and developmentally.
