Position Summary The Academic Skills Teacher provides direct instructional support and academic intervention services to high school students who require additional assistance to achieve academic success. The teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, counselors, administrators, and families to support students in developing the academic, organizational, and self-management skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. The Academic Skills Teacher delivers targeted instruction, monitors student progress, assists students with coursework across content areas, and provides intervention services designed to improve academic achievement, increase student engagement, and support graduation readiness. The teacher creates a supportive learning environment that promotes confidence, independence, and student success. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Student Support Provide direct instruction and academic intervention to students individually, in small groups, and within classroom settings. Support students in core academic subjects including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Develop and implement instructional plans that address individual student learning needs. Teach and reinforce study skills, organization, time management, note-taking, test preparation, and self-advocacy skills. Monitor student academic performance and provide timely interventions when concerns arise. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Assist students in completing assignments, projects, assessments, and credit recovery coursework. Support students in preparing for district, state, and national assessments. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and educational technology to increase student engagement and achievement. Encourage students to develop independence, responsibility, and confidence in their learning. Academic Progress Monitoring Monitor and evaluate student progress toward academic goals. Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and intervention services. Analyze academic data to identify student strengths and areas of need. Develop and implement intervention strategies based on student performance data. Provide ongoing feedback to students regarding academic growth and achievement. Participate in the development and monitoring of academic improvement plans. Collaboration and Communication Collaborate with classroom teachers to support student achievement and address learning challenges. Participate in problem-solving meetings, intervention meetings, IEP meetings, 504 meetings, and parent conferences as appropriate. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, attendance, and academic concerns. Work collaboratively with counselors, social workers, administrators, and support staff to ensure students receive appropriate services and support. Support school-wide academic initiatives and student success programs. Classroom Environment Establish and maintain a safe, positive, and structured learning environment. Develop classroom procedures and expectations that promote student responsibility and engagement. Maintain effective classroom management consistent with district policies and procedures. Foster positive relationships with students while maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations. Demonstrate respect for the diversity, backgrounds, and experiences of all students. Professional Responsibilities Prepare lesson plans and instructional materials aligned to district curriculum and student needs. Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records. Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, and required trainings. Comply with all district policies, procedures, and state regulations. Demonstrate professionalism in interactions with students, families, colleagues, and community members. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL). Endorsement in one or more secondary content areas including: English Language Arts Mathematics Science Social Studies Reading Special Education Learning Behavior Specialist Other state-approved teaching endorsements Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong instructional and classroom management skills. Knowledge of adolescent learning and development. Ability to build positive relationships with students and families. Ability to motivate struggling learners and increase student engagement. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Ability to analyze student data and adjust instruction accordingly. Proficiency with educational technology and student information systems.
