Job Summary:
Teacher of Students with Blind or Low Vision provides specialized instruction and support to students with visual impairments, including blindness and low vision, in accordance with Indiana state standards and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The BLV teacher of record collaborates with educators, families, and related service providers to ensure students have equitable access to educational opportunities and develop the skills necessary for independence and academic success.
Certification and Qualifications:
Valid Indiana teaching license issued by the Indiana Department of Education, Certification or Endorsement in Blind and Low Vision / Visual Impairment Instruction, Knowledge of Braille instruction, assistive technology, orientation and mobility collaboration, and accommodations for students with visual impairments, Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct instruction to students who are blind or have low vision in individual and small-group settings Develop and implement IEP goals aligned with students' visual impairment needs Teach compensatory skills such as Braille literacy, assistive technology, sensory efficiency, social interaction, and independent living skills Collaborate with classroom teachers to modify curriculum and instructional materials for accessibility Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments as appropriate Support students in accessing educational materials through Braille, large print, audio, and adaptive technology Consult with families, staff, and service providers regarding student needs and accommodations Maintain accurate records, progress monitoring, and compliance documentation Participate in case conferences, professional development, and multidisciplinary team meetings Advocate for accessible learning environments and inclusive practices Familiarity with Indiana Article 7 special education regulations Experience using adaptive technology such as screen readers, Braille displays, magnification devices, and accessibility software Ability to travel between school sites if serving multiple locations
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during classroom instruction and supervision. Manual dexterity to operate classroom technology and equipment. Visual and auditory ability to monitor student behavior and respond to classroom situations. Ability to move quickly in response to student safety needs. Ability to perform light physical activities—such as bending, kneeling, and reaching—as required in a classroom setting, as well as lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
