Position:
Special Education Teacher
Objective:
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for day-to-day management of the classroom and provision of instruction, including development and implementation of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, assessment, and curriculum design. The teacher is also responsible for the supervision of classroom staff, ongoing parent contact, and collaboration with behavior support staff and community collateral contact.
Responsibilities:
Design and carry out developmentally appropriate motivating curriculum/programming as warranted by IEP goals / MA curriculum frameworks. Guide classroom staff in implementing goals of children. Provide direct individual and/or group instruction. Provide trans-disciplinary programming through consultation with professional, behavioral support, and therapeutic staff. Collect, analyze and maintain behavioral data on all students within the classroom. Conduct thorough educational evaluations necessary for quarterly progress reports, annual assessment and reevaluations. When scheduled prepare MCAS alternate assessment on students assigned. Provide assistance in feeding, toileting, and dressing skills as developmentally necessary and required. Initiate and support the use of assistive technology to provide access. Daily maintenance of supplies, equipment, and departmental space. Organize daily schedule to meet caseload requirements and uses indirect time appropriately. Consult with staff in other discipline areas to improve programming. Facilitate ongoing parent contact and encourage family involvement. Develop appropriate individual IEP consistent with training in a timely way.
Qualifications:
Minimum of Bachelor's degree in special education or related field. Master's preferred. Certification as a special education teacher (moderate-severe) Knowledge in the area of developmental disabilities, specifically social and emotional disabilities. Knowledge and experience in the area of Emotional Development and Social Skills Training preferred. Demonstrated ability in managing students with severe behavioral difficulties. Familiar with special education assessment tools. Knowledge of curriculum design and development, and the ability to successfully create, develop, and implement individual behavior plans. Demonstrated ability in maintaining and analyzing behavioral data. Demonstrated ability in maintaining effective communication with administration, parents, counselors, and related service providers. Demonstrated ability to lead classroom staff to ensure all are working towards a common vision. Knowledge of MA Curriculum Frameworks and MCAS alternate assessments. Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the provision of special education and the special education process. Certification in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Preventing and Managing Aggressive Behaviors (PMAB) required.
