Job Description

Non-Tenure Track Laboratory Specialist & Course Instructor - Physics Hillsdale College Location Hillsdale, Michigan Open Date Oct 22, 2025 Description Hillsdale College is a small (~1,500 students), fiercely independent Christian liberal arts college dedicated to the perpetuation of freedom through serious learning and moral formation. The College is committed to the Western intellectual tradition and requires genuine excellence in undergraduate teaching. The Physics Department seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track Laboratory Specialist & Course Instructor to organize, oversee, and maintain departmental laboratory spaces and equipment, and to teach laboratory sections in our introductory physics sequence. The College requires all students to complete one semester of physics; labs are offered every semester. Laboratory Responsibilities Organize and maintain laboratory spaces and equipment. Train advanced undergraduates and schedule their use of equipment. Maintain and support major equipment, including: X-ray diffractometer Atomic force microscope Electronic lab equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, etc.) Machine shop tools (lathes, mills, bandsaws) Instructional Responsibilities Set up, take down, teach, and grade introductory lab sections (e.g., motion detectors, electronics, thermal sensors, optics, and related setups). Provide lab support and classroom demonstrations for faculty as needed. Opportunities may be available to assist with undergraduate research or thesis projects. Qualifications Master's degree in physics or engineering preferred; candidates with a bachelor's degree and significant relevant experience will be considered. Experience with advanced scientific instrumentation and/or machine shop tools. Ability to work closely and effectively with undergraduate students. Machine shop and design experience is a plus.
