Summary:
This individual will teach the Medicine, Healthcare, & Bioscience course in the St. Louis CAPS Program by facilitating a working relationship with students and a local partner medical system/healthcare provider. The teacher will provide students in this program the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with durable skills and topics in the areas of professionalism, communication, time management, and project management. The course is ideal for students who are interested in exploring vast career options in the medical field, ranging from nursing and nurse practitioners to physical & occupational therapists to physicians and pharmacists. The teacher and medical professionals work in tandem to help the student understand both their own interests and the breadth of available career options

Students who choose Medicine, Healthcare, & Bioscience will be able to see and experience many areas of healthcare service. Students explore careers of interest through a multitude of activities, including regular interaction with healthcare professionals (site visits, guest lecturers, job shadowing, mentorship, etc.) at hospital partner locations and other healthcare business partner sites. Students work on authentic projects in partnership with healthcare professionals. Students develop industry-specific skills that can enrich an internship experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaches district approved curriculum and adheres to adopted Board of Education policies. Ability to design, develop and maintain a state-of-art curriculum using the direction and guidance from business partners and mentors Willing to facilitate the delivery of the course, while being located within a business partner facility. Provide instruction in various engineering & computer science fields and build student knowledge and skills related to them. Provide instruction and regular practice of essential/durable professional skills. Expose students to the experience of business professionals in their environment through guest speaking, site visits, client projects, and shadowing & mentoring opportunities. Demonstrate willingness to supervise student shadowing opportunities and collaborate with associated shadowing supervisors to provide high-quality & student-centered experiences. Exhibit expertise to develop and maintain multiple business partners, mentors, guest speakers, site visits, resulting in the acquisition of real-world projects for students to work on throughout the semester. Demonstrate effective human relations and communication skills. Use related technologies to enhance instruction. Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere. Evaluates students' professional, academic, and social growth. Keeps appropriate records and provides regular feedback. Identifies student needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day. Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Preference will be provided to candidates with Biology or Unified Science
  • Biology certifications and/or experience teaching the following courses
  • PLTW Biomedical Innovation or Anatomy & Physiology.
Minimum Requirements bachelor's degree with appropriate grade-level and experience with a valid Missouri high school (9-12) teaching certificate. Preferred 3 years minimum experience teaching in an educational setting. Ability to obtain PLTW Biomedical Science core training upon hire, funded by the district. In addition, upon submission of your application you will be sent and required to complete an Educator Performance Inventory (EPI) assessment, which should take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The EPI is a tool that helps assess your strengths, areas for improvement, potential for student growth, cognitive ability, and your teaching skills. The questions are selected at random from a large bank containing a wide range of subjects and scenarios. The results of this assessment are used by the building principals to assist in the screening process and help them determine how your personality and skill set could fill the vacant position. The numeric score given as a result of this assessment will not be shared with candidates as they will not have the materials needed to understand what the results indicate; however, the principals may use the information deduced from the assessment to help guide conversations and professional development should you be hired for this position.
