Department Animal Services Opening Date 04/27/2026 Closing Date 4/30/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description Benefits Questions Job Description Performs intermediate technical work providing a hospital experience for customers and staff at Onslow County Animal Services, providing animal care, and implementing programs to facilitate live outcomes for animals housed in the facility, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Animal Services Shelter Manager. Position Responsibilities Provide customer service through answering phone inquiries; assisting customers within the shelter environment; and responding to electronic communications while facilitating utilization of community resources. Receive incoming animal upon intake and examine them for behavior, diseases, injuries, and adoptability; administers routine vaccinations and medical care to the animal; enters all applicable information into computerized database. Conducts adoptions. Calculates fees and receives monies for all financial transactions in the shelter; receipting each transaction and balancing the cash drawer at the end of the shift. Assists with special programs and community outreach including foster care, volunteers, rescues, and responsible animal ownership education. Furnishes care for animals in the shelter including feeding, watering, enclosure cleaning, behavioral monitoring, and animal enrichment. Assist with cleaning of common areas of the shelter including office areas, reception, and restrooms. Maintains inventory of animal care, office, and cleaning supplies. Carries out humane euthanasia as deemed necessary. Assist in preparation and packaging specimens to ship for laboratory examination. Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of the laws governing the keeping and caring of animals including Onslow County ordinances and NC State legislation as well as general animal health and safety procedures; skill in customer service, computer operation, software application, basic financial and statistical recordkeeping, and program implementation, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with work associates and general public, to communicate clearly and professionally in writing and orally, and to operate office equipment. Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (nonweather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Education, Experience, and Special Requirements High school diploma or GED with coursework in business administration, animal science, or related field and moderate animal-related or customer service experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates/Technical degree preferred. Special Requirements Must be able to obtain certified rabies vaccinator and certified euthanasia technician within first six months of employment. Valid driver's license. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations. Regular Onslow County employees have the ability to participate in a wide array of employee benefits including: Health Insurance Health Insurance is provided by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina and covers a wide variety of healthcare services. Dental Insurance Dental insurance is provided by Delta Dental to full-time employees and covers a percentage of basic to major dental procedures, including orthodontia for children and adults. Vision Insurance Vision insurance is provided by MetLife to full-time employees and covers a variety of materials (contacts and glasses frames/lenses) and an annual eye exam. North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit. NC401k The County contributes 1% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%. Vacation Leave Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases. Sick Leave Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year. Paid Holidays County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners approves and may adjust the schedule as deemed necessary. ComPsych Mental Health Services The County provides Mental Health and Life Services through ComPsych to help employees and their families with personal, family and job-related problems such as counseling, crisis support, work-life resources, legal and financial consultations, and organizational support tools. Supplemental Benefits County employees are also offered a variety of supplemental benefits such as Life Insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts, 457b Deferred Compensation Plan, and MetLife Supplemental Plans.
