Position Summary The Dog Care Specialist supports the Dog Program by overseeing daily operations and ensuring the highest standards of animal care, health, and welfare. This position is responsible for coordinating animal care activities, supporting staff and volunteers, maintaining compliance with organizational policies and procedures, and promoting a safe, clean, and enriching environment for all animals. Key Responsibilities1. Demonstrate and Support Second Chance Values Promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals and treat all animals with respect and compassion at all times. Treat people with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; fosters good public relations beneficial to the organization and its programs. Work courteously and cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and board members, to ensure that all established procedures and policies of the organization are followed. Foster strong, professional relationships with area Animal Shelters, other animal rescue organizations, veterinarians used to provide treatment to animals in the program, and other stakeholders who support the organization. 2. Dog Care Coordination Assist with obtaining photos and bios for adoption profiles for dogs at the Center. Enter photos and bios into Animal Shelter Manager. Transport dogs to and from veterinary clinic visits. Coordinate the dog walker volunteer schedule and ensure adequate coverage for each shift. Fill dog walking shifts as needed. Train new volunteer dog walkers. Attend weekly meetings with the Dog Program Manager to review dogs at Center and the schedule for the week. Provide daily enrichment for the dogs. Reinforce techniques provided by the trainer consultant daily with dogs and volunteers. Coordinate with volunteers to provide off-site enrichment sessions for the dogs. Maintain clean, organized, and safe environments for the dogs by sanitizing the kennels and the play area, washing the dishes, and laundering bedding, towels, and toys. 3. Other Duties Perform other tasks or special projects as assigned by the Dog Program Manager. Qualifications Minimum 21 years of age. At least 2 years of professional dog handling experience. Kennel management and dog daycare experience preferred. Experience scheduling and training volunteers. High energy, positive attitude, and strong teamwork orientation. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills. Ability to multitask, adapt quickly, and work independently with minimal supervision. Strong time management and attention to detail. Experience with Google Workspace (Docs, Calendar, Sheets), Excel, and ability to learn industry-specific software. Valid driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation. Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed. Working Conditions Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Work involves handling and caring for dogs and being in proximity to cats. Some duties performed in a fast-paced, noisy, or physically demanding environment.
