The Richmond Middle School is looking for a passionate Woodworking Teacher to join our vibrant elective team.
The ideal candidate will possess technical expertise in woodworking and the pedagogical skill to guide 11- to 14-year-olds through the journey of turning a rough board into a masterpiece of their own visioning. We are a dynamic community of artists and professionals who believe the shop is a place where students transform from cautious beginners into independent makers. General Purpose:
To provide a comprehensive technical and creative woodworking education that motivates each student to design and create original works of craftsmanship while developing mastery of tools, shop safety, and material science.

N/A POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position:
- Teach woodworking knowledge and skills, including joinery, wood turning, furniture construction, and the application of finishes.
- Guide students through the design process, helping them translate conceptual ideas into plans and finished products.
- Manage the woodshop, including the maintenance of all tools and machines.
- Maintain a rigorous safety program. Conduct safety instruction for all students on all machinery, tools, and equipment, and maintain all equipment in peak operating condition.
- Manage the procurement of lumber, supplies, hardware, consumables, and safety gear within the assigned budget.
- Evaluate the engagement and progress of students and prepare report cards
- Foster an inclusive environment that emphasizes craftsmanship, problem-solving, pride in work, and soft skills like punctuality and shop clean-up.
- Maintain open lines of communication with parents, staff, and administration.
- Participate in faculty meetings and curriculum revision to align woodworking with broader district educational goals.
- Must comply with all SAU 70 District policy and building / department rules, procedures, practices, and objectives.
Evaluation:
Performance of duty responsibilities will be reviewed annually by the building administrator or their designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Skilled woodworker
- Relevant teaching experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Master Craftsman/woodworker with an emphasis on technical precision
- Expert in advanced fabrication and wood science
- Knowledge of shop air-filtration systems and safety standards is essential
- Constant situational awareness to monitor multiple students operating high-powered machinery simultaneously, ensuring a zero-accident environment
- Ability to develop and implement rigorous safety testing protocols and procedures for equipment
- Knowledge of inventory management, including lumber grading, hardware procurement, and budget tracking
- Ability to teach students how to safely operate complex machinery
- Ability to remain calm and decisive in a high-activity shop environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
- Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customised software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks
LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Licensed teacher with Technology & Engineering endorsement (or eligibility for licensure & endorsement)
