The educator will work 10-11 hours/week in a fluid one-on-one / small group classroom construct for the 2026-2027 school year. The educator is expected to be able to teach 8th grade English with differentiation, scaffolding, breadth, depth, and creativity. Special education certification and Orton Gillingham training are required; please do not apply if you do not have a current SPED certification or Orton Gillingham training. Hours are day-time, thus this is not an after-school position. As the goal is for 1:1 instruction, only local candidates open to in-person teaching will be considered. Please do NOT apply if you live more than a 60-min commute; this is an in-person position. There is the opportunity for more hours if the candidate has experience teaching US History (and more hours with 1-2 additional students taught separately). Ideal candidates must have the following:
  • Experience teaching 6th
  • 9th Grade English Language Arts and Literature for a minimum of 3 years (required)
  • Teaching certification (Special Education)
  • required
  • Preference for Masters Degree in Special Education (or related education/field), literacy specialization a plus
  • Experience with and understanding of giftedness and differentiation for gifted students as well as those with learning differences (ADHD, Language Disorders, Anxiety Disorder, etc)
  • Direct experience working with dyslexic students and incorporating assistive technology for students to better access grade level content
  • Specific knowledge of and experience using Orton Gillingham (required)
  • Conscientious, creative, engaging, flexible and professional
  • Strong handle on keeping pace with curriculum, comfortable with creating lesson plans, assessments, projects and tests
  • Can easily go back and forth between different courses with a symbiotic emphasis
  • Experience working 1-on-1, small group classes or in homeschool constructs
  • Ability to create interdisciplinary activities
  • Availability between 8:30 am and 1:00 pm (approx; this is 100-11 hr/week position, meaning sessions 4 to 5 days a week); additional hours possible (we are expecting further enrollment in NYC)
  • Have a personal computer with email/MS Office AND a cell phone with access to email
  • Be a United States citizen with proper U.
