About Laurel Hill School Laurel Hill School is a leading independent school on Long Island, serving students from infancy through Grade 8. Our ten-acre campus provides a dynamic learning environment that celebrates curiosity, creativity, and character. We pride ourselves on a warm, inclusive community where teachers are deeply valued for their expertise, professionalism, and care. Position Overview The Latin Teacher leads developmentally appropriate Latin language and classical studies instruction for students in Grades 3-8 on a recurring or as-needed basis. The ideal candidate is a skilled classicist-educator with strong command of Latin grammar, vocabulary, and translation, the flexibility to teach across a broad developmental range, and the depth to bring Roman history, literature, and the legacy of the classical world into the classroom in age-appropriate ways. The Per Diem Latin Teacher works closely with classroom teachers and administrators to deliver a cohesive program and to contribute meaningfully to the life of the school on the days they are on campus. Key Responsibilities Deliver developmentally appropriate Latin lessons that build vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and translation proficiency across Grades 3-8. Teach Latin language alongside classical literacy — including Roman history, mythology, literature, daily life, etymology, and the influence of Latin on English and the Romance languages — in ways that are engaging and accurate. Use methods appropriate to elementary and middle school students, balancing systematic grammar instruction with reading of adapted and authentic Latin texts. Introduce students to noun declensions, verb conjugations, syntax, and classical pronunciation with age-appropriate pacing. Adapt instruction to diverse learning styles and abilities within mixed-experience groups. Maintain an organized, inviting learning environment with thoughtful use of authentic materials and learning technology. Communicate progress and observations to the lead classroom teacher and administration as appropriate. Maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress for assigned sessions. Contribute to school cultural events and interdisciplinary moments where Latin instruction adds value (e.g., Roman Day, National Latin Exam, etymology integration with ELA). Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Classics, Latin, Classical Languages, Classical Studies, or a related field required. Strong proficiency in classical Latin — including grammar, vocabulary, translation, and reading of adapted and authentic texts — with strong written and spoken English. NYS Teaching Certification in Latin (Languages Other Than English) preferred. Prior teaching experience in a school setting (independent or public), with elementary and/or middle school students, strongly preferred. Strong classroom and behavior management skills. Familiarity with established Latin pedagogical approaches (grammar-translation, reading method such as Cambridge or Oxford Latin Course, or Comprehensible Input / active Latin) is a plus. Reliability, professionalism, and flexibility with scheduling.
