Full-Time | School Year Position | Lead Teacher StipendPosition OverviewEast Providence High School is seeking a dedicated, student-centered, and innovative educator to join our Alternative Learning Program (ALP) as its Lead Teacher. The Lead Teacher serves as the primary instructional leader and program decision-maker for the Alternative Learning Program at East Providence High School. This role extends beyond traditional teaching and includes direct instruction, staff supervision, family engagement, and authority over academic and behavioral decision-making.

The Lead Teacher is responsible for driving student outcomes related to attendance, credit attainment, behavior, and engagement, while ensuring consistent implementation of program structures and expectations. This position requires an educator who can lead adults, manage systems, and make informed decisions to support student success.

Core ResponsibilitiesDirect Instruction & Academic LeadershipDeliver daily, standards-based direct instruction in a small-group settingProvide targeted intervention instruction to address significant academic gapsDesign and implement credit recovery pathways aligned to graduation requirementsEnsure alignment to Rhode Island standards and EPHS grading expectationsBalance direct instruction, guided practice, and structured independent/online learningAttendance & Engagement AccountabilityLead and manage attendance intervention systems for ALP studentsMonitor attendance daily and initiate immediate outreach for absencesDevelop and implement individual attendance improvement plansCollaborate with families and support staff to remove barriers to consistent attendanceTrack, analyze, and report attendance data and intervention outcomesStudent Progress Monitoring & Credit AttainmentTrack real-time progress toward credit completion and graduationUse data to adjust instruction and interventions on a weekly basisHold students accountable for work completion, pacing, and academic expectationsMaintain accurate and timely documentation of grades, progress, and interventionsDevelop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with state and federal regulationsProvide specially designed instruction aligned to student needsParticipate in all required meetings (IEP, BST, etc.)Staff Leadership, Supervision & Program OversightServe as the instructional leader of the ALP program on a daily basisProvide guidance and mentorship of the ALP staffCoordinate and monitor the work of paraprofessionals and support staffProvide ongoing feedback, guidance, and support to ensure alignment with program goalsFacilitate regular team meetings focused on student progress, planning, and problem-solvingBehavioral Systems & Decision-Making AuthorityImplement and ensure fidelity of the ALP behavior point/level systemUtilize restorative practices, trauma-informed strategies, and structured interventionsExercise professional judgment and decision-making authority regarding: Behavioral consequencesAcademic expectations and accountability measuresStudent privileges and program accessCollaborate with administration as needed, while maintaining day-to-day decision-making responsibility within the programSupport students in developing self-regulation, accountability, and social-emotional skillsFamily Communication & Ongoing EngagementServe as the primary point of contact for all parent/guardian communication related to ALP studentsRegularly collaborate with EPHS guidance and administration when necessary and appropriateConduct regularly scheduled meetings with families to review: Academic progressAttendanceBehavioral performanceIntervention plansMaintain consistent, proactive communication to ensure family awareness and partnershipLead family conferences to address concerns, barriers, and student accountabilityQualificationsRequiredMiddle/Secondary (7-12) Special Education or Secondary Content Certification RequiredRhode Island Teaching CertificationMinimum of 35 years of successful teaching experience, preferably with at-risk or disengaged studentsPreferredMiddle/Secondary (7-12) Special Education CertificationExperience in alternative education, credit recovery, or intervention-based programsDemonstrated experience in leading teams, supervising staff, or coordinating programsKey CompetenciesStrong direct instruction and intervention skillsAbility to lead staff and manage a team environmentStrong decision-making and problem-solving abilitiesExpertise in student engagement, behavior management, and re-engagement strategiesData-driven and highly organizedExcellent communication and family engagement skills
