Brazos Valley Regional Day School Program for the Deaf/Administration BuildingPrimary Purpose:
The Signing Instructional Aide supports Deaf and Hard of Hearing students by assisting the classroom teacher and the Deaf Education team. This position provides instructional, behavioral, and communication support using sign language at a functional level.Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or its equivalent 48 hours of college or Para-Educator Certificate preferred Valid Texas educational aide certificateSpecial Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to work effectively with students with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Functional signing skills to support classroom communication
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and awareness of various sign systems used by D/HH individuals
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI)
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- Ability to expressively and receptively support communication at a functional level
- Knowledge of basic office equipment
Preferred Experience:
One year of experience working with children with disabilitiesMajor Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional and Communication Support:
Uses functional signing skills to:- Support students during instruction under the direction of the teacher and/or Deaf Education staff
- Reinforce instruction, routines, and classroom expectations through functional signing
- Assist with small group instruction, guided practice, and independent work
- Support social communication and appropriate peer interactions
- Monitor student attention, comprehension, and need for additional support
- Assist in collecting data for IEP goal development and progress monitoring
Student Support & Management:
- Help students remain engaged, organized, and on task during instructional activities
- Assist with behavior support plans as directed
- Monitor and support student safety during classroom, campus, and transition activities.
- Learn and adapt to individual student communication needs
- Communicate student concerns or needs to the teacher or Deaf Education staff
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with teachers, interpreters, and related service providers
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all district policies and procedures
- Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, professional learning, and special events as required
Other Responsibilities:
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students and families
- Demonstrate willingness to work toward obtaining Texas BEI or RID certification
- Be willing to work at multiple locations as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
