Company Overview Hill Country Humane Society is a dedicated nonprofit animal shelter committed to providing lifesaving care and fostering positive outcomes for dogs and cats in need. Hill Country Humane Society is looking for a hardworking, dependable, animal-loving person to join our team as an Animal Care / Adoption Specialist. This is not a desk job. This is hands-on shelter work. It is physically demanding, fast-paced, messy, loud, emotional, and incredibly important. The right person for this position is someone who is not afraid of hard work, can stay positive under pressure, and understands that every kennel cleaned, every dog walked, every adopter helped, and every animal cared for directly helps save lives. This position plays a key role in both daily animal care and helping pets find homes. You will be working directly with dogs, cats, coworkers, volunteers, adopters, fosters, and members of the public every day. Responsibilities Greeting and assisting adopters, fosters, volunteers, and visitors Helping match adopters with pets based on lifestyle, needs, and the animal's personality Promoting available pets and helping create positive adoption experiences Cleaning and sanitizing kennels, cages, play yards, equipment, and animal areas Feeding, watering, walking, and providing daily care for shelter pets Monitoring animals for signs of illness, stress, behavior changes, or injury Safely handling dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions Assisting with laundry, dishes, trash, sweeping, mopping, and general shelter cleaning Helping maintain a clean, safe, organized, and healthy environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors Following shelter protocols for sanitation, disease prevention, animal handling, and safety Supporting the team during high-intake days, emergencies, adoption events, and busy shelter operations Assisting with set-up, handling animals, speaking with the public, and representing HCHS at adoption events Driving the shelter van to off-site adoption events as needed Qualifications Must be able to work most weekends and some holidays Must have a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving a shelter van as needed Prior experience working with animals in a shelter or veterinary setting is highly preferred Strong animal handling skills with an emphasis on safety and humane treatment. Ability to work effectively in a team environment while managing multiple responsibilities. Stand and walk for long periods of time Lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and more than 50 pounds with assistance Bend, kneel, squat, reach, climb, stoop, push, pull, and handle animals safely Work indoors and outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and changing weather conditions Work around loud barking, strong odors, animal waste, cleaning chemicals, dirty environments, and emotionally difficult situations Handle frequent interruptions and changing priorities throughout the day
Pay:
$13.00 - $18.00 per hour Benefits:
