Primary Purpose:
The AVID Teacher is responsible for delivering the AVID elective curriculum and supporting students in developing the academic, organizational, and college-readiness skills necessary for postsecondary success. This role includes managing a student caseload, implementing AVID instructional strategies (
WICOR:
Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading), and fostering a college-going culture. The AVID Teacher will also support student progress through academic monitoring, mentorship, and coordination of college and career readiness activities.
Qualifications:
Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university Teaching Certification preferred but not required AVID training (or willingness to attend AVID Summer Institute and ongoing professional development) required Experience Experience working with secondary students (middle or high school) Experience supporting college readiness, academic intervention, or student success initiatives Bilingual English/Spanish, a plus Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of AVID methodologies, including WICOR strategies Ability to implement student-centered, inquiry-based instructional practices Strong relationship-building and mentorship skills Knowledge of college and career readiness processes, including applications, financial aid, and postsecondary planning Ability to analyze student data and monitor academic progress Strong organizational and case management skills Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office and student information systems
Functions & Responsibilities Instructional Responsibilities:
Deliver AVID elective curriculum with fidelity Implement AVID instructional strategies (WICOR) across lessons Facilitate AVID tutorials and collaborative learning structures Support development of student skills in note-taking, organization, critical thinking, and academic writing Create a college-going classroom culture through visible systems, routines, and expectations
Case Management:
Manage a caseload of AVID students Monitor student academic progress, including grades, attendance, and engagement Conduct regular student check-ins and goal-setting conferences Maintain accurate student records and documentation Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress
College and Career Readiness:
Guide students through college and career exploration activities Support completion of college applications, FAFSA/TASFA, and scholarships Organize and facilitate college visits and guest speakers Promote awareness of postsecondary opportunities (college, career, military, workforce)
Schoolwide Performance:
Support campus goals related to attendance, persistence, and graduation Collaborate with teachers to embed AVID strategies across content areas Participate in campus initiatives that promote student achievement and college readiness Assist with recruitment and retention of AVID students
Social, Emotional, and Academic Support:
Build strong relationships with students to support motivation and resilience Provide guidance in study skills, time management, and goal setting Identify barriers to student success and coordinate appropriate supports or referrals Promote positive behavior and engagement in alignment with campus expectations
AVID Program Responsibilities:
Attend AVID Summer Institute and required AVID professional learning Participate in AVID site team meetings and program implementation efforts Maintain AVID certification and program fidelity requirements Support campus-wide AVID initiatives and strategy integration
Other Duties:
