Description Benefits Questions Description General Responsibilities:
To provide students with disabilities that impact their achievement in the area of reading with specialized instruction which will enable them to achieve to their fullest potentials. To consult with the middle school reading resource teachers who are providing specialized instruction in reading to students with learning disabilities to ensure a smooth transition to high school.
Essential Duties:
(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Develops data collection systems to note progress on student's reading achievement and uses results to adjust student instruction. Uses the student's individualized educational plans (IEPs) to plan daily instructional activities. Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels and learning profile Organizes learning activities to achieve specific concepts. Assists in developing goals for the student's individualized education program (IEP). Assesses students in the area of reading to provide detailed information for the present level of performance Maintains a favorable psychological environment for learning. Maintains order within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior management. Plan for student transitions between buildings (middle to high) to ensure appropriate materials are in place for the identified students' specialized reading program. Provides good communication between home and school Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by district policy and state/federal regulations for special education. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities. Participates in meetings specific to the reading resource teacher position as well as district level professional development opportunities Keeps abreast of recent developments in education for special education students and shows evidence of continuing professional growth.
Qualifications:
KSA's, Education Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have at least three years of successful full-time teaching experience in the area of reading for students with disabilities. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of reading processes, acquisition, assessment, and instruction at the elementary or secondary levels. Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to be effective in helping students learn.
Education and Experience:
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Required:
Must hold a bachelor's degree (or higher) from an Accredited Institution. Must hold a current Virginia Teaching License. Licensure with endorsements in teaching students with Learning Disabilities or General Curriculum.
Preferred:
Level One Wilson Reading Certification.
Terms of Employment Work Schedule:
7.25 hours/day, 10 month (217 days)

Minimal ability for a wide range of motion to include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and manipulating. May involve repetitive motions and long periods of sitting at a desk or computer and long periods of standing. May involve exposure to moderate weather conditions and includes indoor and outdoor work.
