GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the principal, the Building Trades Skills Teacher provides extensive expertise to teach hands-on work in building and trades skills. Building Trades Skills, as part of the Career and Technical Education Program, designs and implements an effective and appropriate educational and vocational training program for assigned students to prepare them for employment in the Building Trades industry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Teach students the fundamentals of Building Trades Skills and various trade skills techniques and applications; demonstrate proper techniques for welding different types. Conduct hands-on training in trade skills techniques and practices, including safety procedures with carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical work, masonry, and general construction techniques. Demonstrate how to properly use Building Trades Skills equipment to prevent injuries or damage to materials. Support and demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, core principles, and policies of the Danville Public Schools. Adhere to all district policies, procedures, and business ethics codes Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and clearly and concisely communicate those objectives to students. Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division's basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students. Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs; incorporate new and emerging technology into the instructional process. Organize class time so that preparation, instruction, lab work, and cleanup are accomplished as applicable. Create a welcoming, supportive, challenging, and engaging learning environment for students; encourage student cooperation. Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community. Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers regarding school matters. Develop and ensure course licensing or certification requirements are completed for the course accreditation process. Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities. Participate in additional days of occupational-related instructional training (including, but not limited to, SkillsUSA competitions, teacher certification attainment, industry certification training, etc.). Evaluate students' academic and social growth, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records, including attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary. Administer testing in accordance with division and State testing practices and requirements. Instruct students on appropriate safety measures and expectations; demonstrate and teach students about using eye protection and safety guards and the proper use and safe operation of tools, machines, and equipment, as applicable. Manage the classroom to ensure the best use of instructional time; develop and implement appropriate classroom management strategies while maintaining high expectations for student behavior. Work with post-secondary institutions to adhere to Dual Enrollment agreements as applicable. Attend and participate in staff meetings and serve on staff committees Facilitate Career and Technical Education (CTE) program advisory committee meetings. Sponsor the local chapter of their respective Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO); encourage and assist students in competition preparation. Coordinate and oversee Work-Based Learning (WBL) experiences. Foster workplace readiness skills by strategically integrating Virginia's 5Cs ( critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and citizenship) skills into daily lesson plans. Participate in and provide business partners for the CTE Advisory Board. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of principles, concepts, and basic career information related to Building Trades Skills technology Knowledge of steps to prepare students for obtaining credentials, as applicable General knowledge of the PreK-12 educational philosophy, especially the importance of school attendance Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups Ability to use various industry equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, and electrical equipment for children, etc. Demonstrated ability to communicate well both orally and in writing, including preparing various correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, instructional materials, etc., using a prescribed format Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Must be detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal communication skills and phone etiquette
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement. H.S. diploma or equivalent; Associate's or equivalent in Building Trades Skills field or Building Maintenance experience preferred. Five years of related experience in a related field.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS
Work is typically performed in the school setting. Significant standing, walking, moving, and bending are required. Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds and other physical activities are required, depending on the subject area taught. Handle trade workers' equipment and materials and exert negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, as applicable. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential tasks. Daily contact is made with teachers, other employees, students, administrators, and the general public in person and often by telephone, email, and/or in writing.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
11-month contract
EVALUATION
The school principal will conduct performance evaluations annually to assess the effectiveness of the employee's performance in carrying out the above responsibilities.
