Teacher Scale Position Summary Implement the special education assessment process. Assess the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred to special education services. Provide diagnostic information and work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities or those students referred for special education evaluation. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements and qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Essential Functions Administers diagnostic educational evaluations to assess the academic functioning and educational needs of students and writes comprehensive educational reports. Participates in eligibility meetings and provides interpretation of educational assessment findings. Represents the school division at regional and state advisory meetings to ensure a high quality of educational services Provide families with the resource materials and technical assistance regarding current research and best practices in instruction and curriculum, learning, special education and referral process. Coordinates the quarterly meetings for the Special Education Advisory Committee. Provide staff development training in assigned schools to assist school personnel in identification and understanding of students with disabilities. Consult parents concerning the educational needs of students and interpretation of assessment data. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents. Assist in the selection of assessment materials and equipment. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the assessment program and make changes based on findings. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the areas of assessment, placement, and planning for special education services. Monitors and provides technical assistance to new teachers and provides feedback to improve the instructional delivery and services for special education students. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative regulation. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence. Attends and serves on staff committees committees as required. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of special education and specialty area. Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities. Thorough knowledge of school rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior. Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment. Must possess excellent supervisory, interpersonal and communication skills. Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis. Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats. Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports. Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the core curriculum and Virginia SOL's. Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public. Qualifications, Education and Experience Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher's license or certification with appropriate endorsement in subject areas for which employed; or Has completed the requirements for a Virginia certificate or license and has filed an application for same; or Will qualify for a Virginia certificate or license prior to the effective date of employment. Prior teaching experience and/or student teaching is strongly preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires pushing or pulling. Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities. Must be mobile enough to monitor students in all instructional settings (in school and on school grounds). Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special Requirements Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board. May require the ability to acquire a valid driver's license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
