Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans and implements the instructional program for students with disabilities in assigned subject area(s) following the school and school division policies and procedures and the Virginia Standards of Learning. Employs a variety of teaching methods and instructional materials using high leverage special education practices to meet the range of student abilities and needs, including available instructional technology. Monitors student behavior and maintains discipline for a safe learning environment. Models and encourages appropriate behavior standards acceptable in the school community and develops Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans as needed. Maintains student records and Individual Education Plans as required by the school, school division, state of Virginia and federal policies, procedures, regulations and laws. Abides by all Special Education timelines and IEP implementation requirements for each student in the assigned caseload. Participates in the Virginia testing program by utilizing appropriate instructional strategies to assist students in the highest levels of achievement. Follows all school, school division rules and regulations and state and federal laws regarding testing. Effectively communicates with families regarding their child's educational progress via periodic written reports and verbal communications including, but not limited to scheduled progress reports, report cards, and parent/teacher conference days as per school and school division policies and procedures. Works cooperatively with supervisors and colleagues in order to ensure continuous improvement in providing the highest quality educational program and the safest and most inviting educational environment. Participates in professional development opportunities for personal and professional growth. Plans, attends and/or participates in special events as requested by administrators including, but not limited to, field trips, school assemblies, PTSA. Maintains a professional image in the school and the community as a representative of the school division. Maintains the appropriate license for the Special Education assignment in the state of Virginia. Follows the regulations and policies of the Radford City Public Schools, the laws of the state of Virginia and federal laws. Other duties as assigned by school administrators. Minimum Training and Experience Four year degree from an accredited college or university on the state of Virginia approved list. Virginia license in Special Education General Curriculum K-12 or Special Education Adaptive Curriculum K-12 required. Endorsement in Special Education General Curriculum K-12 and Special Education Adaptive Curriculum K-12 preferred.
