Long-Term Substitute Dance Teacher Position Overview The Long-Term Substitute Teacher for Dance is responsible for providing continuous, high-quality instruction in dance education during the absence of the permanent teacher. This position ensures that students receive consistent instruction aligned with the established curriculum, lesson plans, and school standards throughout the duration of the assignment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Delivery Implement existing lesson plans and unit frameworks developed by the permanent teacher, adapting as needed to meet student learning needs. Deliver engaging, technique-focused dance instruction across multiple styles (e.g., ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and/or cultural forms) based on course curriculum. Manage a safe and inclusive studio/classroom environment appropriate for physical activity and creative expression. Provide real-time feedback and individualized coaching to support student skill development and artistic growth. Lead warm-up sequences, across-the-floor exercises, and center combinations appropriate to each course level. Curriculum & Assessment Continue instruction within the current scope and sequence; develop supplemental lesson plans as needed with department head approval. Assess student performance through observation, participation, peer review, and written reflection assignments. Maintain accurate and up-to-date grade records in the school's student information system. Prepare and administer any scheduled tests, projects, or performance assessments. Classroom & Studio Management Establish and maintain clear behavioral expectations in both classroom and studio settings. Enforce all safety protocols related to dance studio use, including proper warm-up procedures and equipment handling. Monitor student conduct and communicate behavioral concerns to administration as appropriate. Submit accurate daily attendance records in accordance with school policy. Communication & Collaboration Maintain regular communication with the department head, assistant principal, and other relevant staff. Provide written daily/weekly updates to the permanent teacher (if on medical leave) or department head regarding instructional progress. Attend required faculty meetings, department meetings, and professional development sessions. Communicate with parents/guardians as directed by the school administration. Extracurricular & Co-Curricular Duties Support and supervise any scheduled dance performances, rehearsals, or showcases occurring during the assignment period. Assist with costumes, staging, and logistics for school performances as requested. Serve as a visible and positive representative of the Dance program within the school community. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Dance, Dance Education, or a related performing arts field (preferred). Demonstrated proficiency in at least two dance styles appropriate to high school setting. Prior teaching or instructional experience in a K-12, studio, or higher education setting. Ability to pass a state and federal background check per network requirements. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements This position requires sustained physical activity in a dance studio environment. Candidates must be able to demonstrate and model movement for extended periods, including jumping, lifting, bending, and other dance-related physical tasks. The role may also require supervising outdoor or off-campus rehearsals and performances. This position is not benefits eligible.
