As one of Alabama's leading school districts, Huntsville City Schools is committed to providing an inclusive, supportive learning environment for all students, including those with diverse learning needs. This substitute role plays a vital part in ensuring continuity of care and instruction for students in the Special Education Department when regular aides are unavailable. In this position, you will assist the principal and/or assigned teacher, librarian, or area specialist in their daily performance, reporting directly to the building principal or assigned staff member. Substitute Special Education Aides are expected to step into a variety of school settings with professionalism, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to student well-being. Whether supporting students with physical, behavioral, or academic needs, your presence makes a meaningful difference in the lives of students who rely on consistent, compassionate support. This is an on-demand substitute position, meaning your schedule will vary based on school need. Upon arrival at any assignment, you will report to the front office for temporary badging and must present proper identification before beginning work. Professional appearance and communication are expected at all times, and appropriate professional attire is required for every assignment. A Day in the Life A typical day as a Substitute Special Education Aide begins with checking in at the front office of your assigned Huntsville City Schools location, presenting your ID, and receiving your temporary badge and assignment details. You'll connect with the lead teacher or specialist to understand the day's schedule, student needs, and any individualized education plan (IEP) accommodations in place. Throughout the day, you'll work alongside students in a classroom or resource room setting — providing one-on-one or small group support, assisting with academic tasks, helping students navigate transitions between activities, and offering behavioral encouragement as needed. You may assist students with personal care tasks, mobility support, or communication depending on the needs of the individuals you serve. Success in this role looks like a calm, structured environment where students feel safe and supported, the lead teacher's plans are carried out smoothly, and every student has the assistance they need to participate meaningfully in their school day. Responsibilities Assist the principal and/or assigned teacher, librarian, or area specialist in daily instructional and operational tasks. Support students with special needs in academic, behavioral, and social-emotional activities as directed by the lead teacher or IEP guidelines. Implement individualized education plan (IEP) accommodations and modifications under the supervision of the classroom teacher or specialist. Provide one-on-one or small group instructional support to students with diverse learning needs, including physical, cognitive, or behavioral challenges. Assist students with personal care, mobility, transitions between activities, and daily routines as needed. Maintain a safe, structured, and positive classroom environment by following established behavior management strategies. Communicate effectively and professionally with teachers, school staff, and administrators regarding student progress or concerns. Report to the front office upon arrival at each assignment for temporary badging and follow all school check-in procedures, including presenting proper identification. Maintain professional appearance and communication, wearing appropriate professional attire for every assignment. Connect with the lead teacher or specialist to understand the day's schedule, student needs, and any individualized education plan (IEP) accommodations in place. Requirements Required ! Completion of Jason Flatt Act Training (suicide awareness and prevention training required by Alabama law) or willingness to complete prior to first assignment. ! Completion of Erin's Law Online Training (child sexual abuse prevention training required by Alabama law) or willingness to complete prior to first assignment. ! Ability to present proper government-issued photo identification upon arrival at each school assignment. ! Meet Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) eligibility requirements for working in a school setting. ! Ability to pass a background screening as required by Huntsville City Schools and the ALSDE. Preferred High School Diploma or GED; Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or higher education credentials are a plus (documentation of highest level of education will be required if applicable). Prior experience working with children or adolescents with special needs, disabilities, or diverse learning challenges. Familiarity with IEP processes, behavior intervention strategies, or special education classroom environments. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to adapt quickly to new school environments and student needs. Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting the academic and personal growth of students with disabilities.
