SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY
The Assistant to the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) travels to the students' assigned schools and/or community sites to provide direct and/or consultative special education services relating to a student's hearing loss as directed by the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. These services could include teaching academic and/or social skills to students with various methods of communication to students in a variety of settings. The students range in age from 3 through 22 and may have only hearing loss or they could have additional disabilities. This specific position will be housed at the Ed Center, located at 120 E. Walnut St, but will require travel, as needed, to assigned Indianapolis Public Schools and Non-Public schools located throughout Indianapolis.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
The following outlines what your core duties and responsibilities will be for this position and provides a sample overview of what your day-to-day may look like. Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction, modeling and support of students identified as DHH across educational settings
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop appropriate modifications and accommodations for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in accordance with the IEP
  • Encourage students to participate through their preferred manual sign system or primary mode of communication in classroom learning experiences in order to ensure comprehension of subject manner
  • Follow a plan to teach, support, and document the development of age appropriate social skills including friendship and how to develop relationships
  • Utilize an assessment system for progress monitoring student achievement toward IEP goals
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment and materials
  • Provide and implement appropriate individual student activity adjustments and assist in the development of behavior interventions plans as needed
  • Other duties as assigned "Day In the Life" Overview On a regular day, as the Assistant to the Teacher of Students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH), you might:
  • Work with students at various schools of various age
  • Consult with a teacher about the best way to utilize a student's interpreter

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Deaf Studies and/or Deaf Education from a four-year college or university
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
