Job Description

Only online applications will be accepted: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/downey This is a Open recruitment to establish an eligibility list, fill vacancies, and hire substitutes. Substitutes work on an as-needed basis to fill in for absent employees. The eligibility list will be used to fill permanent vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligibility list. Positions in this classification are part-time, 28 hours per week, 11 months/184 workdays per year. The recruitment process will consist of a written and an oral technical interview which is tentatively scheduled during the weeks of July 27, 2026 - August 7, 2026 . BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of certificated personnel, assist in the elementary physical education program.

Assist in organizing students into squads or teams. E Lead warm-up exercises. E Perform clerical tasks such as taking attendance, recording performance scores or test grades. E Assist with supervision of physical education activities. E Confer with physical education teachers regarding students' progress and problems. E Utilize physical education equipment such as game balls, tape measure and stopwatch. E Operate a vehicle to travel to various school sites to conduct work. E Assist with physical performance testing as directed. Demonstrate skills required for physical fitness testing or game participation as directed. Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF
Methods and techniques of communicating effectively with students. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record keeping techniques.
ABILITY TO
Demonstrate skills required for physical fitness testing or game participation as directed. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Learn the basic methods, procedures and policies of assigned physical education activities. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Utilize physical education equipment such as game balls, tape measure and stopwatch. Operate a vehicle to travel to school sites to conduct work. Demonstrate attendance required to perform duties of the position.

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and six months' experience working with children in a recreational or physical education environment.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid California driver's license.

ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor classroom/work environment.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Standing for extended periods of time; walking or running over rough or uneven surfaces of an athletic field; bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to demonstrate skills and calisthenics; hearing and speaking to exchange information and explain game rules; seeing to monitor student activities and behavior; and carrying, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 15 pounds.
