Essential Elements:
Print Basic Function:
Under general supervision from the elementary grade level teachers(s), assist with instructional and non-instructional duties related to the classroom educational program.Representative Duties:
Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions listed below. Duties may vary from classroom to classroom within the school site. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements. Student Support and Assistance Monitor and assist students individually, and in small groups on math, reading, writing, science etc. Set-up and help with instructional exercises and special projects. Help supervise students during recess and lunch. Listen and provide support and encouragement in an effort to promote positive behavior and independence. Administer minor first aid. Classroom Assistance Gather, prepare, and organize learning materials (copying, supplies, manipulatives…). Set-up bulletin boards and displays of student work. Assemble student books for classroom display. Work with parent helpers to assist students on special projects. Teacher Support and Assistance Assist with grading, recording, and distributing papers; check-in homework and papers returned. Administer make-up quizzes and tests to students who were absent. Prepare and collate communications and papers to send home. Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned. Maintain discipline in the absence of the teacher.Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to graduation from high school. Courses in child development and experience working with school age children are desirable.Skills:
Knowledge of appropriate grade level academic areas of instruction; and techniques used in guiding and motivating students. Clerical work including keyboarding and photocopying.Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of:
Appropriate grade level academic areas of instruction. General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics. Techniques used in guiding and motivating students. Record-keeping techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, respect and courtesy.Ability to:
Meet District standards of professional attitude as outlined in Board Policy 4219.21 Code of Ethics for Classified Personnel. Relate to students in individual or small group situations. Be flexible in a variety of classroom situations. Perform light clerical work, which may include keyboarding. Give and receive oral and written instructions in English. Spell correctly, use proper English, and make simple arithmetic computations. Learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and to apply them under general supervision. Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.Working Conditions:

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; adequate vision to read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting light objects.
