Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Helps meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified education specialist.Classification:
Part Time Reports to: Principal and Education SpecialistDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following job duties and responsibilities are essential functions of the position, in addition to any duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time:INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT
Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment. Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers. Assist in implementing Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Assist in collecting academic and behavior data as needed for the purpose of programming and instructional planning.STUDENT MANAGEMENT
Help meet the individual needs of students. Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Assist assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. Assist in supervision of play and lunch activities, bus loading and unloading when needed. Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.OTHER Physical and Personal Care Support:
May include assistance with toileting, such as diapering, lifting, and transferring. Also assists with dressing, feeding, grooming, personal hygiene, adaptive devices, mobility, and potentially basic first aid. Maintain confidentiality. Participate in professional development programs, staff meetings, and special events as assigned. Utilize technology as appropriate to the position. Perform other related duties as assignedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to work with children with disabilities Ability to communicate effectively Preferred one year working with children in a special educational setting or child care setting Understanding of basic subjects taught in schools. Knowledge of child guidance principles and positive behavior management techniques, especially for students with special needs. Ability to work effectively and patiently with diverse students. Ability to support instruction, monitor progress, and collect data. Effective oral and written communication skills with students, parents, and staff. Ability to follow directions and maintain confidentiality. Ability to use standard classroom and office equipment. Knowledge of health and safety regulation.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum High school diploma or GED 48 semester units (official transcripts) and a passing score of the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) within 60 days of hiring If you have aB.A./B.S.
you do not need the CAPE test Department of Justice fingerprint clearance Proof of Negative TB test within the last four years CPR/First Aid certification within 60 days of hiringWORKING CONDITIONS ENVIRONMENT
Classroom and playground environment.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students and/or to retrieve and file materials. Position will often be required to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects between 10 and 30 pounds. HAZARDS Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
