DEFINITION
Under the oversight and general supervision of the Center Director and guidance of the Lead Teacher, program responsibilities will include working as a member of a teaching team; to assist in supporting and celebrating ethnic and family diversity that reflects the evolving practice of a reflective curriculum.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
General Responsibilities :
Obtains, reads, and understands the program philosophy, mission statement, and personnel handbook. Performs general daily, weekly, and monthly cleanup/organization of classrooms, bathrooms, closets, and kitchen area. Participates in assigned staff and team meeting, yearly in-service trainings and off-site learning opportunities such as early childhood workshops or classes.
Classroom Responsibilities :
Assists in maintaining children's indoor and outdoor environments that are nurturing, secure, safe; prevents accidents, illness; encourages play, exploration; promotes problem solving, learning, growth in all developmental areas; reflects children's learning styles; and meets the needs of all children enrolled in the program. Assists in the supervision and instruction of children. Supports the Lead Teacher in implementing a curriculum plan for young children in areas such as self-concept, sensory awareness, problem solving, concept formation, physical/motor development, pre-literacy, and math skills in addition to being inclusive of children with special needs. Assists the Lead Teacher in working with children to reach developmental milestones. Supports a multilingual environment for children.
Staff Relations :
Assists the Lead Teacher in assessing children's development by writing anecdotal observation notes Supports all staff members in their duties. Maintains open and respectful communication to children, staff, and parents. Serve on a team of early care and education professionals. Works cooperatively with other staff members, accepts supervision, and helps promote a positive atmosphere. Maintains strict confidentiality regarding enrolled families and employed staff.
Family Relations :
Assists in activities that support the parent community, including parent meetings, conferences, home visits and in-take meetings. Maintains strict confidentiality regarding families enrolled at the center. Directs parents, visitors, and volunteers to the appropriate staff person when in need of information, referral to other agencies, and/or additional services.
NOTE:
Essential Job Functions may be both on and off site locations, days and/or evenings and/or weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
18 years of age or high school diploma/GED preferably enrolled in an accredited ROP program. Current pediatric CPR and First Aid certification. In good health and free of active Tuberculosis. Must provide completed Health Screening Report, Immunizations, and Department of Justice clearance prior to employment.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Demonstrated ability to perform the duties effectively as described above. Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, assume postures in low levels to allow physical/visual contact with children and engage in physical activity with children. Ability to see and hear well enough to keep children safe. Ability to communicate well with adults and children of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including people with disabilities. Ability to implement classroom and outside activities. Ability to be sensitive to all children in a multilingual classroom while modeling appropriate curriculum. Able to reach a child 20-30 feet away in 30 seconds without danger to the staff person's health. Ability to meet or exceed the company's attendance and punctuality standards.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
: A minimum of 6 Early Childhood Education/Child Development units OR enrolled in classes relating to child development. Working towards a Concentration or Associate's Degree in Human Development, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or related field. Bilingual ability in English/Spanish. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population.
