INSTRUCTIONAL
AIDE - SPECIAL EDUCATION
Job Summary:
The job of "Instructional Aide - Special Education" is done for the purpose/s of assisting (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of special education students; assisting teachers with routine clerical tasks; and assisting students by providing for special health care needs.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Assists parents and/or teachers for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and/or developing students' daily living and behavioral skills.
  • Maintains classroom materials, assists with students' files/records as pertains to special education files/records for the purpose of ensuring safe and appropriate learning environment.
  • Adapts classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Monitors individual students, classroom and/or playground activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping, e.g., recording test results, clerical functions, duplicating materials, handouts, assisting with assessment of student work, etc. for the purpose of supporting the teacher in maintaining student files and providing classroom materials.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, agencies and community resources for the purpose of obtaining and/or providing information on individual students.
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and ensuring the needs of the students.
  • Prepares teaching materials for the purpose of implementing lesson plans.
  • Prepares documentation, e.
g., grade, attendance, etc. for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
Other Job Functions:
  • May need to administer first aid and medical assistance to students for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children. Provision of routine services to medically fragile students with highly specialized health needs will be assigned upon mutual agreement between a supervisor and instructional aide.
  • Reports incidents, e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, etc. for the purpose of maximizing students personal safety and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
  • Participates with students in group activities for the purpose of developing leadership, teamwork, social skills, and responsibility.
  • Consults with teachers, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services and/or making recommendations.
Additional or different functions may be assigned as required. Job Requirements -
Qualifications:
    Experience Required:
    Prior job related experience, paid or volunteer, with school age children.
    • Skills, Knowledge and/or
    Abilities Required:
    Skills to perform clerical functions, basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, use of English grammar, punctuation and spelling. Provide for special health care needs of students. Knowledge of the principles of child development and learning disabilities. Abilities to understand and address students with special needs; understand and carry out oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, demonstrate flexibility, meet schedules and deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies; use English in both written and verbal form, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations; sit for extended periods of time. Significant physical abilities include crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/ accommodation/field of vision, stand or walk for prolonged periods.
      Education Required:
      High School diploma or equivalent.
      • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or
      Testing Required:
      TB Test clearance, Criminal Justice Fingerprint clearance, Instructional Aide Proficiency Test. First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificates may be required.
