Jul 30, 2026 Job Description Overall Purpose Works in a self-contained classroom environment under the direction of the special education teacher. To provide support to the instructional program within assigned classrooms with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in various settings; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior, assisting with data collection, providing information to the appropriate school personnel. Essential Functions Implements under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts. Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a healthcare professional (e.g. tube feeding, medication, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs. Administers classroom assignments, test, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process. Assists students, individual or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring students success in school. Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, car and/or bus loading/unloading, etc.), and responds to emergency and non-emergency situations for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. Assists with managing the behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed. Implements Behavior Intervention Plans and collects data under the supervision of the assigned teacher. Recognize the differences in each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction accordingly. Maintains confidentiality of students and other professional information. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Requirements High School Diploma or GED Certificate required. 60 Semester hours of college credit from an accredited educational institution or a passing score on the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment required. Mindset (De-escalation and Physical Containment) Training upon hire. Successful experience in job related area preferred. Physical Requirements Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. Education/Training Maintains all licenses and certifications.
