Job Description

TITLE:
Paraprofessional Aide/Special Education Aide
QUALIFICATIONS
H.S. diploma required. College coursework preferred. Prior similar job experience recommended. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO
Building Principal/Classroom Teacher/Special Education Teacher
JOB GOAL
Paraprofessional Aide:
To assist the teacher by monitoring and working with individual students or small groups to help them implement strategies in the regular classroom.
Special Education Aide:
To assist the professional staff in providing for the students with special needs in a well-organized, smoothly functioning environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Learn specific teaching strategies presented by the teacher and focus on assisting students with the strategy. Builds relationships and partnerships with selected students to support the outcome of the strategy. Participates with regular classroom teachers in evaluating and assessing student effectiveness in utilizing strategies. Develops and/or assists in the development of teaching aides and other classroom materials. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce strategies initially introduced by teacher. Performs other clerical duties as requested. Participates in in-service training programs as assigned. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers. Performs those tasks requested by the building Principal. Assists with students on implementing the specific goals of an individualized educational plan. This includes the academic, behavioral and social skills as outlined for the students. Supervises students to assure safety and compliance with the rules. Provides assistance as needed throughout the day-including bathroom use, hallways and other general areas such as the lunchroom as needed. Performs simple errands and tasks for student(s) as instructed by the special education teacher. Works with individual students and small groups to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher. Capable of physically performing duties, such as lifting and transferring, a student with physical disabilities as required by the individualized educational plan or health plan. Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement. Paraprofessional Aide/Special Education Aide Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student personnel staffing team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
