Aug 1, 2026 Job Description Special Education Vocational Program Assistant Paraprofessional Purpose Statement The Special Education Vocational Assistant Paraprofessional supports the instructional and vocational programs for students with disabilities within the assigned school. The position assists with classroom instruction, supervision of students, and vocational skill development in both school and community-based settings. The paraprofessional works under the direction of certified staff to reinforce instructional objectives, monitor student progress, and support students in developing independence and workplace readiness skills. Reports To Vocational Coordinator, Building Principal, and Director of Special Services Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist teachers with instructional activities, assignments, and materials to reinforce classroom and vocational learning objectives. Provide support to students individually or in small groups in areas including academic skills, social skills, daily living skills, and vocational skills. Monitor and supervise students in classrooms, hallways, field trips, assemblies, and other school settings to maintain a safe and positive learning environment. Assist with the supervision and support of students participating in community-based vocational training and job site experiences. Support students in developing appropriate workplace behaviors and independence in school and community settings. Maintain vocational program supplies and assist with preparation of instructional and job-site materials. Assist with vocational program activities such as student recognition programs. Observe and document student performance and communicate relevant information to supervising staff. Assist in maintaining classroom and program organization including bulletin boards and informational displays. Perform other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the vocational and special education programs. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning and behavioral needs. Basic academic skills including reading, writing, and mathematics. Ability to follow instructional plans and directions from supervising staff. Ability to communicate and collaborate with teachers, administrators, and related service staff. Ability to support students in both classroom and community-based vocational environments. Physical Demands and Working Conditions The position requires navigating classrooms, school buildings, and community job sites for extended periods of time. Work may occur in classrooms, school facilities, and community-based vocational training locations. The employee may work with students requiring behavioral, instructional, or social-emotional support. Licensure & Clearance Must hold or be eligible to obtain an Illinois Paraprofessional Educator License (PEL) with Paraprofessional Endorsement issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and pass criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance.
