ABOUT THE NORTHWOOD
The Northwood:
An Acton Academy is a learner-driven K-8 micro-school. We are opening in Evansville, Indiana this September with 7-15 learners. We're part of the global Acton Academy network
  • a community of schools built on the belief that every child is a genius with a heroic story to write. At the Northwood, children are not passive recipients of instruction. They set goals, manage their time, choose their learning paths, and hold each other accountable. Adults in our community are called Guides
  • not teachers
  • because our role is to ask great questions, hold the space, and trust learners to find their own way forward.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We're looking for an Assistant Guide who will work alongside our Lead Guide to support a multi-age learning community. While Indeed lists this as "Assistant Montessori Teacher"

  • this role goes beyond any single method.
It draws on Montessori principles, Socratic discussion, project-based learning, and the Acton Academy model. This is not a traditional classroom job. There are no lesson plans to deliver, no rows of desks, and no lectures.

curious children, real challenges, and the deep satisfaction of watching a young person discover what they're capable of.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Support learners as they work through self-paced academic challenges (reading, math, writing, projects) Help maintain a safe, focused, and joyful learning environment Facilitate small group Socratic discussions Model the habits of a lifelong learner
  • curiosity, ownership, and perseverance Work collaboratively with the Lead Guide to refine studio culture and systems
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR A
genuine love of self-directed learning
  • in children and in yourself Patience and the ability to resist the urge to rescue learners from productive struggle Warmth, consistency, and strong relational skills with children ages 5-14 A growth mindset and willingness to learn the Acton model Experience working with children in any setting (camp, tutoring, childcare, classroom, parenting, etc.
) A teaching degree or Montessori certification in NOT required. We care far more about your beliefs about children than your credentials.
